My answer is yes and no... Sure, anyone can "sing". But, some people will never improve no matter how much they practice. I guess it really doesn't matter today. Just listen to any of the young pop singers and you'll notice a slight robotic sound to their triplets... That's Auto-Tune, or some other pitch correction software. Sometimes, it's used as a gimmick (an overused gimmick)... but it is used a lot.

I "sing"... But, my voice is in the same vein as maybe Hendrix, Dylan, Ian Hunter, Jagger, Lou Reed, Mark Knopfler... I guess you'd call them troubadours. No, I don't sound like them... But, I've worked something out so it doesn't sound bad, it's sort of on key and people seem to like it.

Great Scott - you think Jagger practiced to sound like that? That's bad news for the "work hard" view...

I meant for that to sound like even most people can 'know their limits' as Jagger, Dylan, etc..

Hmm...a Dylan/Jagger duet would be something.

Thank you all for taking interest towards the topic!

As for me, I don't think myself particularly "good", but not necessarily bad either. My friends tell me that I have the nicest voice among them, though I've never actually tried to learn to sing.

But many of you have offered some encouragement, and I think I'll be taking a swing at this; even if practicing means as little as singing to the radio at work.

Thanks everyone. Perhaps in a few months I'll be incorporating some vocals to my playing

Hmmmm no.... Everyone can be a singer... A good one... no... Just like not everyone will be able to play an instrument well...

I would say just about all of us can go to a blues jam and sing some blues.. Because a "good voice" is really not necessary for that... Just find the key you are most comfortable with.. and go with it...

I would have to say its a whole lot easier with natural born talent but can be achieved with a lot of practice including proper singing lessons if the person is serious.

Like anything else, some people have more natural talent than others, but anyone can improve their singing throuh practice and proper technique. Try to practice a little bit each day (in the shower, behind the wheel -- wherever) and I think you'll begin to notice progress pretty quickly. Just like a weightlifter needs to work out his muscles regularly, your vocal chords need regular exercise.

I look at it this way - practice helps but you are still limited by the equipment you were born with. You can always upgrade to a better guitar and amp, nothing to upgrade when it comes to your voice. Except for all the digital effects they use nowadays anyway.

In some albums, and even in some specific songs, Dylan's voice is as soft as butter. Just listen to Another Side Of... or Lay Lady Lay compared to his self titled album or Highway 61. Especially for Another..., I heard that he tried to quit smoking in the favour of his singing? But nowadays, if we must talk about one of his most recent albums... Boy, I think Santa spent a bit too much time in that chimney! But, as (very close to) everything else from the legend, it's magnificent!

Whatever you guys say, I think that to be be a good singer, you need to have some inherent talent - practice alone is not enough.

I started singing while playing when I learned my first song back in '79. I discovered that I have no natural talent for singing (or playing). In my last band, I sang during practice just so we could have some vocals until we found a "real" singer. My voice is not pleasant at all, and I've never been able to sing in (any) key. In my head I think that my voice is in key, but the sound coming out of my mouth is nowhere near being in tune with any musical note! I do not have an ear for music, and that keeps me from being even a poor singer or a decent guitar player. I actually like to sing, but if I can't tell if I'm in key or not then I'm useless as a singer.
