My question for you all today is whether singing is something that can be improved with continued practice. That goes for clarity of voice, range, etc. Or is it the type of thing that only comes to gifted people - those who just "have it"?

I'm asking this because I feel vocal ability seems a valuable asset to accompanying guitar playing. What do you all think? Can it be learned?

Like anything it's continued practice. Used to be I couldn't sing a note but I can now and it's just with trying harder and harder. It's the same as any instrument except it's in built really.
When I was a kid I used to think guitars could only be played by the gifted like you said about singers.
Keep singing and you WILL get better. Just remember how terrible we were at guitar when we first picked it up. Relate it to that.

Hope this helps, best of luck!

CC

Yes to your question. I was never much for singing but was always asked to and still get it from time to time if I stand in and play for someone. Seem people like my singing I don't no why, even my Son's friends have said they like my singing

People have been trying to get me to sing publicly since I was in grade school. Everyone seems to think I have a great voice.

And now since I have having issues with my lungs Dr's are telling me to sing.

What's a guy to do? ;-)

I think almost everyone has the ability to learn to sing, however to become a good singer you need other things as well. You have to have the right outgoing personality. If you are a very introvert shy person it will be pretty difficult to become a great singer, even if you are good. It is almost always the person singing in a group who gets the most attention. If you play the bass, you could stand a bit at the back, and still play very very good, if you sing in the band, you are at the front, getting all the attention.

Everybody can be a good singer, they just have to put there mind to it and not give a damn what people think.

I agree with this. Some might be easier off then others because they have a more accepted tone, but as long as you work at it you can be good.

Hi Toronado: yes!

I am living proof that a singing voice that is an atrocity and a crime against humanity can with much work be turned into one that is merely pretty unpleasant.

You are never going to hear it to make a judgement, though...

Sorry man but I have to disagree with you on that...I've seen people who thought they could sing but couldn't carry a tune in a bucket....and they keep doing it for years without improvement.
Just like anything else in music, you have to have some talent to begin with, and spend lots of time learning how to do it and practice alot.

In my experience, singing can be greatly improved over time and with more experience you learn to know your limits and what keys work better for you.

Also, on the other hand, if you've been singing steadily for years and you stop or slow down, it's much harder to hit those high notes and breathe correctly from your diaphragm when singing.

Practice singing without looking at your guitar (or instrument) and know your limits...kind of like Dylan, Jagger, Clapton, etc.

Great Scott - you think Jagger practiced to sound like that? That's bad news for the "work hard" view...

Whatever you guys say, I think that to be be a good singer, you need to have some inherent talent - practice alone is not enough.
