well, at my job now, 11 months. but i'v been managing restaurants for 2 years and working in the restaurant biz for about 3 1/2. before that i spent 3 years at a pharmacy working as a delivery guy lol.

hopefully in a couple years i'll have enough money saved to start my own buisiness. i want to use my skills as a finish carpenter and not just let them go to waste. i like woodworking and i see it as an art. i would love to devote my life to art! but for now, im still flipping burgers haha

Six years, here, and in... let's see... half an hour I get the feeling I'm about to find myself in the same position as the O.P.'s wife, with about the same to show for it. :(

It's always the way... last night the kids' dog died, and now this.

/edit: I was correct

I have been with the government since 1988. I was 17 when I joined the military and have been employed ever since.

Oh man that really sucks mondo- sorry to hear that mate. cost cutting is going around and wont be a reflection upon yourself :) My company is about to shed 200 jobs by August

I have been at my job for 5 years nearly, no career development, no monthly reviews, no career plans, no goals etc.. for two years now. I have come to the conclusion that it doesnt matter how keen I am for advancement- it's just not going to happen. My manager is more concerned about his own advancement to give a crap about anyone elses.

The time is nigh to up-skill, Im thinking of doing a degree in Linguistics next year... perhaps those who are without a job should give study a thought :)

Besides, knowlege is something we should all keep up on throughout our lifetimes. Imagine what you could pass on to our grandkids:)

I've been enjoying "the thanks of a grateful nation" since 1993 when I retired from the miltary after twenty-two years in uniform. My knees are gone, my back isn't far behind, one ear doesn't do so well anymore, and I can't pass through an airport metal detector without setting off the alarms due to a piece of Russian steel still lodged next to my renal artery.

BUT I STILL ROCK!

I think I missed the boat with the military, I think that I would have thoroughly enjoyed it as a career.

I enjoyed "the thanks of a grateful nation" when I retired from the Army in 1971 after twenty months and fourteen days.

Been with the same company for over 20 years and loving it. Fortunately, my job and the company I work for has been stable thus far.

I've been at my current job 2 years now. First year I started out in Shipping Dept. and now I'm in Sales Dept. It's a little more stressful, But the compensation is much better. I work for a good, Family owned company. See the Owner on a daily basis and can speak with him whenever, Thats nice to find these days. But as some of the others have said, the long term future is a little uncertain in these times. Love My Job. 8)

Not the playing job or night gig, I mean the job you have that pays the bills, pays for your toys, and supports a family. I ask because my wife had worked at Sears for 21 years in management, and a couple of months ago they told her that her department numbers had to come up. Well they didn't come up as much as they needed to see, so they've let her go. Twenty years on the job, giving up weekends and holidays, and this was her reward.
So, how long have you been at your job?

"Not the playing job or night gig", I've been at this the longest for the shortest pay.

"I mean the job you have that pays the bills, pays for your toys, and supports a family." The last one of these was almost two years ago at a company for 4 years.

"I ask because my wife had worked at Sears for 21 years in management, and a couple of months ago they told her that her department numbers had to come up. Well they didn't come up as much as they needed to see, so they've let her go. Twenty years on the job, giving up weekends and holidays, and this was her reward." This story I have heard many many times and I am sorry it happens and I truly hope that things turn out to be better now that your better half doesn't have to go to that place any longer.

My day gig now is looking for a day gig, start again Monday morning.
