So the band I recently joined currently practices in a church. Well, said church is only available to us one night a week.

So the question is... Where does your band practice?

Sure, we considered the storage unit route, but I'm wondering if there is another option we're over looking.

Any and all advice welcome and appreciated!

When I was growing up, I played drums in several bands. Our bass player was part of a neighborhood church. As a result, he had access to the church hall, whenever we wanted to practice. We used that place all the time, stage and everything. In fact......we used that church hall to hold our own dance. Charged admission to get in....and made a good amount of money for buying band equipment.

The last few years I played with a band as a rhythm guitar player. That broke up, and is now getting back together again. For practice we use our homes. Neighbors enjoy the music, so they're tolerant. Also.....the lead player has access to his work place.........so we're able to use that office building. The office building is located at the top of a mountain, so we don't disturb anyone.

For church we practice in the youth lounge. For everything else it's been in people's houses.

I usually practice in the rehearsal rooms in recording studios. In the Uk by where I live there are about 4 not to far from my house. They arent expensive either, about £30 for 3 hours. You get all your stacks, drums, PA etc.
Although I have looked at storage rooms and warehouses before with bands.

Good Luck

Do you cover Mississippi Queen or Theme From An Imaginary Western or Nantucket Sleighride?

Back in high school, it was basements and garages. My last band, the Bluez Doctorz had a space at the other guitarist company warehouse, Lynn Ladder. The current band, Slurred Vision, practices at the lead singers warehouse, New England Van and Truck equipment. I had to throw the plugs in, for I'm greatful and lucky to have these spaces availible to us. :D

Unfortunately, we all live in the same neighborhood (which is the size of a small town) and our neighbors arent as tolerant. So the garage idea is a no go!

As indicated in the original post, the church is only available to us one night a week.

Keep the ideas coming!

My son plays drums in a metal band. They used to be able to practice in the garage, but after the guitar player went from a single 12" Fender amp to a Crate 1/2 sdtack, the only neighbor we have started complaining to the cops, and it was over. We're looking into renting a practice space. IMHO, playing in a band in the garage sure beats the kids running around outside and getting into trouble. The band keeps them busy, inside, and working towards something. All it takes is a crappy neighbor to help ruin a kid's future in music. :x

We've all done the basement jam thing, hauling stuff up and down stairs, etc. Leaves you with no energy for playing

But I'd like to think I'm older and wiser now. For our church band we practice on Wed nights in the church, with the sound system, before we play a Sunday.

For our classic rock band, we went one better. About 10 years ago our drummer bought a farm house with 70 acres of land. We built in the barn a 17x30 room, insulated it, wired it, installed electric heaters, sheeted it and now have an awesome practice space. There is a seperate power meter and the band's gig $ pays the bills. So we're able to set up our PA, make us much noise as we want and don't disturb anyone. On the 1/2 of the 20 acres that's farm fields he has a local farmer that leases the land for hay/corn. So Chris makes some money off of that and the rest of the barn is used for storage of farm equip/hay bales. It's a really sweet situation.

We rehearse in RinkyDink Rehearsals in Belfast mate. Supposed to be £10 an hour but we get 5 hours for £30 cos we are regular and know the guy who owns it which is cool.

Sometimes its better to pay for somewhere, it saves us bringing a full drum kit etc. Mark just brings his cymbals and foot pedal. Also there are amps there, full desk an PA. It just cuts down on the load.

Practice rooms can be pretty affordable here in LA too and no trouble with the neighbors. You can find fairly modern setups that should have most of the basic gear you need for guitar/bass/drums. They often have nothing for keyboards and you'd need to bring your own stompboxes but other than that, they can save a lot of hauling.

It's only good luck that we could use the drummer's basement back in band days. His parents were cool with it and the only close by neighbor was around 90 and very deaf.
