The Vox VT30 is a hybrid amp with 12AX7 power tubes and all valve preamp section with all sorts of amp models and built in effects that you can get new for around $250. I have th VT50 which is pretty much the same just bigger and cost more. They are great amps and if nothing else it will give you an idea of what high end amp and effects you would want to invest in.

I agree, save more money. If you can't, I'd go with a Frontman 212 for solid state for tube amps, A Peavey used Classic 30 amp would be really reliable and sound great and you can also try Jet City amps http://www.jetcityamplification.com/ simple no-nonsense amps designed by Mike Soldano. Really reasonably priced and get great reviews. You can get a new 20 watter for about $400. I see them at GC for $350 used or wait for a sale to come up.

I bought a used Peavey Classic 30 several years ago for around $350. It's a very good sounding, very reliable amp for the price. It costs less than some solid state amps. And the volume can go from bedroom to small club, so it's versatile. When I got it I was really into hard rock and metal, and it worked for that coupled with a distortion pedal of some kind. Now that I'm into blues, it can do that too. And I think it would sound great for jazz.

I'm with Hop on this one, save your pennies bud. It will be worth it in the long run, I know from my own experience
