Hi guys and girls, first post in the Fender forum! Been stalking around posts but I couldn't find any topics that discussed this subject.

Anyway, I know the buying-a-bashed-up-guitar-new topic is quite a sensitive one, and we all have our own views on them, I personally dig the feel and the look on the Road Worn Strats. I've just been wondering whether the chaps at Fender have ever considered making Ultimate Relic Road Worn guitars that look like SRV's #1 Strat or John Mayer's TBO Strat.

As stated here by Mike Eldred: http://www.fender.com/community/forums/viewtopic.php?t=22347 the replica of JM's TBO Strat is actually a Road Worn version, not a CS crafted Strat, and I must say it looks pretty convincing... And if Fender's plant in Mexico is capable of building such fine stuff, why not?

Anyone have any news or opinions on whether Fender will be producing any ultimate relics anytime soon?

Thanks for spending your time to read this,
Richard

Hey Rikipu…welcome to the forum.

They recently did the YJM play loud (duck) strat which was pretty beat to crap……I think Fenders market is more along the lines of gigging musicians and guitar enthusiasts of modest income…..A guitar “ultimate relics” as you suggest requires a lot of work and carries a steep price tag that only a serious collector has Money for…I don’t believe that kind of piece is a great investment for the company as it is not gonna be a fast seller at 12 grand or better…….its a cool idea but not a sound investment for Fender or customer alike…(or at least most customers)

Cheers
Bill

Hey Bill, thanks for the welcome.

I've had a look or two at the YJM Strat, heard it was a poly-finished beaten up one, quite different from the nitro finished Strats. However if they were originally planning to release the JM production line TBO strat under the Road Worn production series (which they turned down now for a NOS version), I'm sure the guitar would be priced somewhere around the $2 grand range like other artist series guitars? Just a rough guess though.. Though I do agree that they might not garner enough demand for Fender to make a good profit out of this..

Just what fender needs to do, release John Mayer road-worn guitar for $2000. Next up they can make a Justin Beaver reliced acoustic guitar to make it look as if he had been playing it since the minute he left the womb.

Fender actually do make "ultimate relics" but they are high end custom shop guitars.

In 2007 we approached the Fender Custom Shop with an idea. We wanted the most beat-up, played-in Stratocaster we'd ever seen, and we wanted it to feel like it had been played every night for 40 years. Soon we realized that we would have to take the aging processes developed in the Custom Shop to their limits to produce what would end up being not a tribute to any famous guitarist, but a tribute to the instrument itself. The Ultimate Relic Stratocaster® was born.

We really wanted something that had that special vibe, that particular feeling that so many vintage, well-played instruments have. We had our doubts that guitars aged to this degree wouldn't be done right unless it was a tribute model or some such limited edition. But we shouldn't have doubted Fender's Masterbuilders. Custom Shop veteran John Cruz and guitar building phenom Jason Smith immediately "got it" and met our challenge with an extraordinary attention to detail and skill.

We can order your Ultimate Relic based on Stratocaster® models from 1954 through 1969, in original colors and custom hues. All Ulimate Relics have a extremely worn (and thin) lacquer finish and a very soft neck feel, with the neck profile determined by the model year. We add a special players touch by outfitting most of the guitars with a slightly flatter 9.5" fingerboard radius, and slight larger 6105 medium jumbo frets. Is it a player's guitar? Or is it a collector's guitar? It's both.

Not cheap though.... $5,000.00 +

Yeah that's actually where i got the idea from as well besides the JM Road Worn proto. Though i doubt Fender is gonna start making them for cheap.. Just wanted to see if anyone had similar interests about this.
