I never knew there were any good agents anywhere in the first place...

I'd talk to local bands and musicians in your area and see who they would recommend or who they tell you to stay away from. I'd also talk to venues and see if they use a booking agent, and if so, who. Also, keep in mind in this day and age booking agents don't need to be in the same city, state, or area where a band is from in order to book them shows. It can all be done, and usually is done, through mail, phone, fax, computers, and internet.

I don't live in Texas so I can't answer your question. Maybe if you did some research you'd find the answer.

Most agencies are based out of LA or NYC. Thanks again to Nikki being helpful in a thread once again!

Actually, it's not true that "most agencies are based out of NYC or LA."

I've worked with booking agents in Phoenix, in Orlando, in Chicago, in every town where my company has ever done a live show.

There are professional booking agents in every major metro. Keep in mind that most of them specialize in some way: they mostly book magicians and comedians for trade shows, or they mostly book bands for corporate parties, or something along those lines.

Also, keep in mind that there are good ones, and there are bad ones. I've worked with agents that I later found were keeping 50% of the booking fee, and the band was getting the other half.

A guy who calls himself a "booking agent" and wants 10% or more to help you get gigs in local bars is putting you on. You don't need a guy to get you gigs in local bars unless the bar owners tells you "this guy does all my booking."

What you need an agent for is better gigs: corporate shows and parties, big-money weddings, college concerts, etc. If that's what you're going for, then ask around about how is good and who isn't, and then sell yourself to that agent. Make a professional pitch, be ready to work at short notice (I've called and booked a group of 4 background singers on 48 hours notice, and rehearsed them 4 hours before we went on), don't act like a jerk on the gig and you'll get plenty of work.
