I was just wondering if it is normal to use thumb picks on electric guitar? I am asking this question because everyone that I know that palys guitar only uses thumb picks when they are playing acoustic.

I've never used a thumb pick on any guitar. Don't like the way they feel or sound.

hmmm yeah, i'm not a big fan of thumb picks. just not my thing. But I always pictured them to be more of an acoustic thing. different strokes for different folks, I guess...

If you're comfortable with them, than thats normal for you. There are no rules, so just do whatever feels, sounds, and works the best for you, regardless if it conforms to the norm.

I know John Cipollena(sp) used finger picks so maybe he used a thumb pick too. And I believe Bonnie Raitt(sp?) does the same. (tough last names if you still need to buy their cds  )

I've never really gotten along with thumb-picks myself, although I've tried using one from time to time. But, take a look at Tommy Emmanuel or perhaps Patrick Simmons. They make them work very well.

I haven't heard of many ppl using thumb picks until now. I like using them for different stuff. Puts a nice rip on chords if u bang it hard enough  . But anyway, no it's not real common for guitarists, but I do know that Johnny Thunders uses one (and a slide on his pinky). Good combonation for fingerpicking because there's always the change you'll drop the pick during a solo and have to rip your fingers open or bend down and pick it back up. (but that's why Fenders come equipped with a handy dany oversized pickguard to shove loads of picks into! 8)
Happy playing!

I've seen Steve Wariner use them on
acoustic and electric guitars...

He sounds pretty darn good too...

The thumbpick does feel awkward. Lately I've been using a metal fingerpick on my middle finger while still using a flatpick (James Burton style). It took me awhile to get use to it, but when I did it seemed like it gave me more possibilities. It also helped me play alittle faster, which was a good thing.
