So I have a reissue Epiphone Casino on the way, will be here in a week or two.

But suddenly for some reason I have a burning desire to get a Fender Coronado as well. I have known of them for a while, but only got a burning desire to get one this week.

They do look cool as hell, but can anyone here who actually has one comment if its worth the hassle to get one - are they a novelty item or a real guitar - how would one stack up against a reissue epiphone casino?

More importantly these things were going for a couple of hundred bucks in 1999 now I see they are around $3000 - are they appreciating well or am i missing something?

Worked for Elvis. I always thought the Strat headstock on that body was just wrong.

You realize both these guitars are fully hollow with open fholes. They'll feed back without even plugging them in.

I wanted one very, very badly but I couldn't save up enough money before they sold it. I thought it felt wonderful, more like a Fender than a typical hollowbody and the tone was very good. What I don't like about ES-335's and guitars like that is that they have a dark tone. I loved the Coronado because it still had that hollowbody sound, but with Fender brightness.

I don't know how well built they are (if I had gotten one I would have debated replacing the tuning machines, keeping the originals of course). But they seemed good enough, they've lasted this long right? When I was playing it I didn't notice any feedback, but I was at bedroom volume. But I have seen Jimmie Vaughan play one live, at full stage volume, with no feedback at all. Maybe he modified his or something, I don't know.

Anyway, to be honest I think they make better guitars now for $1500+ but you won't find another guitar like a Coronado. That is probably what makes people (myself included) actually want to buy one even at those prices.

From personal experience and if you think about it, the Casino, ES-335/345/355 and Gretsch 6120 are the legends, the greats, the immortals among thin-bodied guitars...

...for good reason.

But if y' think y' really, really need one, there are always a few Coronados at guitar shows, at least around metro Chicago. "Are you Experienced" (and educated) about Coronados?
