If just an open A chord is needed I just barre my index finger across the D-G and B string and either let the high E ring or mute it. And outside of playing chords up near the nut I hardly ever play voicings that use all 6 strings. As you get a much better rhythm sound with 3 or 4 string voicings and hitting all 6 strings but muting the other strings out with your left hand. I think SRV was the master of doing this in fact I can hear the chunka-chunka-chunka in my head just thinking of him. More amazing was his muting mastery while soloing and hitting all six strings while just having the single notes he wanted popping out. Complete control!

+1 to that, straycat!! SRV was just awesome to watch. I know some people who despise him for his seeming arrogance and his substance abuse early in his career. But I say, may he rest in peace and let his music do the talking. Another talent taken way too early, IMHO.

Strangely, I have a (stuffed) tarantula in a glass case on the wall above my amps (true). It was given me by an ex-girlfriend. Either as therapy or cruelty, I was never sure which...

Ha... Mrs mondo has a morbid fear of moths (I know... what are they gonna do..? ), shared by her daughters -- I'm forever walking around with a container and a rolled-up newspaper while a trembling female bleats "Kill it! KILL IT!" -- yet when we first moved in together she gave my mounted Atlas moth a prominent place in the lounge room. It certainly wasn't a case of "Love me, love my moth" on my part, but I've always thought of it as a sweet gesture of acceptance from her. To be fair, that thing is so huge it's probably removed from the realms of whatever's so terrifying about moths, which I imagine to be some sort of insidious concern about smothering.

And mention of SRV's muting reminded me that I shamelessly lifted whatever technique I may have from him years ago, without ever having really been a fan as such. He's undeniably great, but a lot of his stuff just isn't for me for some reason. I do listen often to his version of Little Wing, though, and from it I learned to mute all six strings with my index finger and play the one note I actually wanted with my second finger, hard... heh. Striking all the strings intentionally to increase the attack on just one of them was new to me, and it got me thinking in different ways about melody.

I just wanted to let everyone know that I hate the Gsus4 chord. I don't really care for the sound or that there isn't a variety of ways to grab it.
Anyone else have a guitar chord or scale nemisis?

Pete Townsend likes it.

Ha - indeed! How many sus4 chords can we get into one number? Well, here's Pinball Wizard, for example. Or Sparks. Or...

And to Mrs Mondo: how could we possibly find this cuddly little fella sinister?
