With all the focus on the oil spill in New Orleans and the NYC car bomb I feel you were over looked.

Good thinking John.E I hope everyone is OK, most of my Tennessee friends are either in the Chicago area or up in the Cumberland mountains but we may have some Forum Bros and sisters there and we just don't know, again hope they are OK and if they were part of that at least recovering.

I live 45 miles west of Nashville and work for an electric utility that borders Nashville,Davidson Co. and many of our customers have been flooded...it's a complete mess.
I've seen high water here many times in the past but not like this.
Many people are going to have to rebuild their lives and homes from the ground up.
One thing is that people here pitch in and help, and most don't sit back and wait for it to be done for them....it's one reason we don't make the news that much in certain situations.
Thanks for asking, and I hope others are making it through.

It reminds me of what happened here about ten years ago when Tropical Storm Allison flooded a good portion of Houston. I don't know how much national attention that got either, and Hurricane Ike (which was very hard on the coast) was totally overshadowed by the election. We (Texas) basically had to fend for ourselves after both of those storms.

Anyway, my thoughts and prayers are with everyone who's having to deal with the flooding in Tennessee. Hopefully it won't be long before everyone's able to recover.

I live 30 miles or so southeast of Nashville. The worst of it missed us, it was north and west. But it was wet and all of the major roads, including the interstates, were out for a while.

I had to drive 20+ miles out of my way each way on Saturday night to see Jimmy Buffett...

I've read that the flood waters are stage high at the Opry. The dressing rooms are a total loss. The concern is that there may be a substantial loss of instruments, mostly vintage and collectables, artifacts, stage gear, etc.

I've wondered about the Opry house too,it's been years since I was backstage and that was just for a short time, but it would be a cool place to explore...no telling what's in there.
The news reported that they did get some historic mic stands out,I guess ones that were used at the Ryman. My first thought was about vintage instruments also.

The SoundCheck studio where these instruments were stored :

The amount of lost gear is staggering. Don't have exact figures on everything but here's what I've heard...
Possibly up to 2000 instruments.
Vince Gill had 350 guitars there.
John Fogerty had 30 vintage Les Pauls.
Kix Brooks had 50 Gibson J-200's
Keith Urban lost everything.
Brad Paisley lost everything except his '68 Tele which he had at home.
Peter Frampton said that everything was gone.
Lee Ann Rimes had her entire show loaded into trailers ready to head out.

The list goes on and on.
Virtually every touring or studio musician in the town had stuff there.

and yet, despite that, the musician community is participating in numerous benefit shows to raise money to help those that lost homes, etc.
Vince Gill, in particular, has participated in at least 4 shows to date and spearheaded the first one at Channel 4 that raised 1.7 million dollars.

My hat is off to all of them.

Don't attack me, and I'm not cold hearted, but.....

My wife commented to me after I told her about everyone's loss of collectable gear at Soundcheck, she said "if they are so collectable and valuable, why did they keep thier collections there, locked up, unseen, unheard, unplayed? Don't they all have nice big homes to store them in?

Just her humble opinion (she's not a musician).

Nashville Instrument Carnage :

FYI, here's a linky to Soundcheck Nashville's blog, which has photos of the flooding, as well as their instructions to clients on removing gear from the building, arranging for attempted restoration, etc.

http://soundchecknashville.com/wordpress/?paged=2

"Backstage Custom Cases has set up shop in the 3427 Ambrose Ave. location to do re-foaming of cases. Come on by and get in line to have your case re-foamed. Please remember to clean all your cases and spray them with an anti-microbial solution to keep mold from setting up in the wood before having them re-foamed."
