How many of us have worked in a music store in the past? Has that "inside" knowledge helped you score a better deal, or has it made it more difficult for you to justify the prices you gotta pay? I worked for a couple of stores in the past (a long time ago). Things and policies have changed so much it doesn't make a difference in today's stores. I did work at Guitar Center back in May and June of 2007 when our store opened. I still have the employee manual that they asked me to return or discard. After I started there, I heard so many horror stories about the employees not getting paid or thier commisions being messed with that I bailed. Matter of fact, of the 30 people they hired, there are 0 left there.
For a while when I went to GC, I told them I used to work there, and they would cop some kind of alien attitude towards me. Never helped me get a deal.

No I never have worked in a music store but obviously it is not a good job. I live 5 minutes from a big Sam Ash in Brooklyn and outside of the family members that own the place and one manager I have never seen an employee last a year. It is a revolving door of new employees everytime I walk in and through the years some of the older guys who worked in the guitar department were pretty cool along with the countless guys that were clueless, lol but that tells me the work place or pay is not good.

Masterhacker I always wondered what kind of deal they gave the guys who work in GC on gear.

I've never worked at a music a store but I'm trying to... like Guitar Center or Skips because those are like the only places in Sacramento that I can find that actually sell guitars I've heard of and most are really nice.

As for the employees, I see people working there that have been there since i remember. Most even recognize me and my friends when we go in... and sometimes you see former Skips employees working at Guitar Center and former Guitar Center employees working at Skips

I guess it's like I told my friends, Sacramento must be the Twilight zone lol

Never worked in a guitar store before but I had a friend who was like a mentor that taught me all about guitars, various styles and brands and the ins and outs. Usually when I get to talking guitars with people and they find out I have only played for a year they want to know how I know so much about guitars. It's actually nice because 75% of the guitar stores I go in I know more than anyone on their sales team and it comes in handy when trying work a deal or having to "educate" them about the gear they are getting paid to sell.

I'm honest but opinionated..... I would never sell anybody a BC Rich. I wouldn't be able to live with myself lol

I'd always be pushing Fender/Squier, Gibson/Epiphone, Schecter and PRS on the electric front and Martin, Gibson/Epiphone and Taylor on the acoustic front since those are my favorites.... so I guess my honesty only goes so far
