just thwarted a break in across the hall, 2 perps, 1 knocking on the door while the other trying to jimmy the lock, I called through my door for them to get lost and they began to talk back to me saying no, then I told them I was calling the cops, after a minute they took off down the hall, I called 911 and then followed them and to be honest I was glad they beat me to the door, I found our super on the second floor and he came upstairs then went to try and catch up to them but they were gone (thank God) he opened the door with his key and I could see the apartment is a shambles, don't know what went on in there and don't want to, the cops showed up and I gave them the info and all I could think about is those 2 girls that got their heads beat in with an aluminum baseball bat last week, 1 of them still in the hospital, its gonna be a long hot summer here in Chi, 7 dead and 2 wounded in the last 24 hours.

Take care Solid, you did the right thing by the sound of it. Don't be a hero with these guys, just call the cops, remember they are paid and trained to deal with these characters.
Keep safe man, you're too good we don't wanna lose ya. 8)

Do not confront criminals. Just call the police. If it's your door they're trying to enter... well... do what you have to do.

My daughter uses door bars that wedge against the doorknob when she is home in Providence. You cannot force the door open inward even if you could unlock it. They leverage and lift on the doorknob.

If I was in a place where I could not have a gun, I would go to the hardware store and by myself a nice axe and a file to sharpen it up REAL GOOD! You can defend yourself quite nicely with an axe and they're scary as hell. I suppose a machete would do about as well. Just don't attempt to use either in a gun fight.

SBLS

Cmon mate, migrate out to rural England. All we get is the occasional smackhead whos scared of their own shadow.

Is it cos the summer is coming on? Birmingham was a lot like that. Peacfull as Jesus's manger until April/May, when all the nutters would emerge.

Stay safe mate, thoughts are with you.

SBLS I would just like to offer you up some advice for a future incident which I hope never happens. If you are not in a position to defend yourself like the story you just mentioned where you can just open the door and have a piece(gun) in your hand your best bet would to have quietly called the cops and reported what was going down. I am not saying this to scare you but to honestly put you on your guard. You do not know what was going on or what went down next door but God forbid it was something serious like a murder, by shouting out across the hall they would know that you could ID them and could of actually put yourself in the middle of a problem. You did not say if the girls who were beat were the ones that lived across the hall so I cannot analyze that. But obviously if the super opened the door and the place was already in shambles that says someone was already there and went through the place looking for something and these guys evidently came looking for the same thing. So what I am saying is if you would of saw them trying to break in and went in another room and called the cops and just waited odds are they probably would have got nailed inside the apartment. There seems to be a lot of drama going on where you are, maybe it is time to start looking for a new place.

Excellent work, SBLS. Not sure what your neighbors have that the perps wanted, but they still have it because of your action.

When I had a bunch of illegals move into the house next door, I was on the phone to the cops, ICE and the MCSO all the time. I'd come home to blaring ranchero music all night, constant mechanical work on trucks and cars, yelling etc. I'd have the cops come over and report to me, so the mojados would know it was me and not the old lady on the other side of them. They egged my truck and would glare at me as they passed, but I finally drove 'em out.

Kept my little Beretta Model 21 under the pillow the whole time. :D Probably will need something stronger here in AZ.

Good work, SBLS.

My Bros, thank you, I keep a chair against my door and I won't be engaging any bad guys if I can help it. CV you are right about a side arm, just hoping it won't go that far, actually I moved to the northside to get away from that kind of action, when I was younger I didn't mind but it seems to be moving this way now. Rhumba I will stay safe, VT BlackStrat good advice too, nikininja I will have to see if I sell any records this time if I do I'll be visiting often. Summer in the city brings out some not so desirable behavior patterns in some people but I'm guessing it is this way in most cities to different degrees. The jail is so overcrowded downtown that they let a couple thousand convicted felons out early so this summer.... I am more worried about the younger people from out of town getting drunk and then thinking it is OK to walk home from the bars, there has been a rash of attacks on them and that is not good for those youngsters or public relations. The girl that is still in the hospital is here from Ireland and I'm a little worried that if those Bros get angry they're gonna' need more room at the morgue.

You did the right thing, no need to confront them or attempt to subdue them. Call the police and let them handle and keep yourself out of the whole ordeal. Good job, calling the Police. I salute you, especially since the whole "no snitching rule" seems to be prevalent in many areas and all that does it make it tougher for good people to live peacefully and criminals to get punished.

Yet another reason why you won't catch me anywhere near most "inner cities" (assuming you are in Chicago) or really urban areas. I'll stick to living in good ol North Carolina down the coastal backroads. And I k ow this can happen anywhere but I feel safe in my home, locked and loaded just incase a perp decides to pull something like that at my home.

Thanks straycat113, it wasn't those 2 girls who were hurt, that happened near my old apartment a popular area for young people, I only wanted to stop them because my neighbor across the hall was a young woman that I haven't seen in a week so I didn't know if she was there and didn't want them to get to her, with no heater, yelling at them to leave was about all I could do unless they had got the door open and I didn't want to think of that as I would have sustained some damage in an altercation. good thought, them getting nailed by the cops inside the apartment I just didn't know if she (the tenant) was in there maybe as scared as I was, I may move when my lease is up though.

glad everything is okay. this is exactly why i have 2 large dogs and plenty of hardware. not trying to be a hero. i just want to protect my wife and home. if you don't want a gun, at least carry a knife, stun-gun or learn some basic self-defense. i choose all of the above.

And if you don't have any of those... worst case scenario (and I mean as bad as it gets because what I'm suggesting is an act of desperation) is you can always use your guitar/bass because I'm sure getting whacked with one of them (if it's a solid body) would slow somebody down, especially if in the ribs or the noggin

Johnny B. Goode, you must know me, I would not want to use Love (my p-bass) as a weapon but in a pinch I could swing her with some accuracy.
