I've been playing bass or 2 and a half years now and only recently started watching and listning to jaco. I've never been a jazz music guy or jazz fusion for that matter but his speed and melodic solos made me a fan.

Any way he's pretty much my new insparation and he's also got me looking back at traditional jazz and walking bass lines. His style is so cool and to me it's the bassits anwser to how make peoples jaws drop with playing that isen't slap. No offence to slap players but I think this a way cooler more impresive practical style. He's also got me playing 2 hours a day longer than usual!

So any other jaco pastorius fans on this forum?

Will P

p.s. Suppose i'd catch a larger amount of fans here because he was a big fender jazz bass player.

Yes saw Weather Report back in the day. Rumors have Jaco used to eat greasy fried chicken before the gig to slick the fingers . If youve ever played flat wound string I would recommend something.

Thanks for posting will pumpkin I always admired his style of playing for the sounds he got out of that Jazz Bass, I play with a pick and just thought he was the best without one. I'm a little embarrassed that I did not know we were the same age.

Very cool. :D My Dad's a huge Weather Report fan, and I like it too.

Jaco was an amazing bass player, it's a shame he had so many problems, Drugs alcohol, mental illness, he had bipolar disorder. He was beaten to death in in 1987 at 35 down in Fla. He had family outside Phila, Pa. in the Norristown area.He was a pretty weird guy and would get pretty violent sometimes. If you ever went to one of his gigs, you'd never know if he'd show up. If he didn't feel like playing, he wouldn't. It's a shame he was a brilliant bassist. I would have loved to see how much further he could have gone.

If you like Jaco you should check out some Michael Manring. I believe he was one of Jaco's few students. I seen him live twice and all i can say is"He's awesome"

I've been a Jaco Pastorius fan since I first heard him with Weather Report back in the '70's. If you want to hear another fabulous bassist check out Tal Wilkenfeld. She plays and tours with Jeff Beck. She's amazing!
