Welcome to the Forum, cool 1st post!

don't know if Richie Havens was technically correct but I dug listening to him play guitar with his thumb.

Two words: Django Reinhardt

In the minds of all music lovers, be they players or not, technical prowess will forever be subordinate to the ineffable: feeling, soul, passion.

Play what you want, how you want, but play it with feeling.

It's good to learn the "proper" way, but then to feel free to ignore it if it makes sense.

It's better to know the rules if you're going to break them.

Why purposely limit yourself?

You may find the "proper" way actually learns better, because the "proper" way came from figuring out how to do something--not from some stuffy committee that decided to make things tough on budding guitarists.

So, yeah break the rules if you must--but learn them first, then do what's right for the song.

Go with your gut feeling and how comfortable you feel when you play.

Everyone bends the rules a little bit cause they can play better that way.

At least you know the right technique but then again what is the right technique if it works just as well and people love your music?
