so i have been playing for some years now and my fingers have never given me any problems but lately they have been hurting like hell fire, and they are more torn up then ever,

i notice alot more copper resedue on my fingers when i have been playing my acoustic lately, also i have been tasting a metallic taste in my mouth for a few weeks at random, and i noticed it real bad last night after i finished playing,,,

so my question is... is it possible to play with strings that have oxydized and inturn leave copper deposites in your fingertips which hurt like a mother effer and make ur fingers look like you have been trying to climb a brick wall spiderman style?

and ps i think its time to change my string s but i have a show tonight and i dont want to be tuning every two seconds u know, i do alot of rough finger picking and such so i mean.. i was thinking maybe krazy glue to take the places of my busted calese but idk what do you guys think

thanks for the input

i do not have an educated answer as usual. i'm guilty of letting my acoustic strings go for a year or more without changing them. mostly cause i'm lazy or working alot. i too notice my fingers get a little more color on them but i've never had any problem with it.
my secret is to keep just enough alcohol in my system to compensate for any other toxins that might creep in.

if you have a metallic taste in your mouth, and think it comes from your fingers, but not from putting them in your mouth, then you might be showing signs of blood poisoning. It could be nothing, but it could be one of a variety of things that could be serious.

best of luck, but I don't think it's a bad idea to wget checked out.

I can't see copper causing any toxic problems through osmosis as people have been wearing copper jewelery for millenia with no ill effects. The only way you could conceivably get a copper taste is by biting your nails or putting your fingers in your mouth probably to relieve the pain in your finger tips.Have you considered switching to phosphur-bronze strings or some alternative amalgam?BTW there are several conditions that have symptoms of metallic tastes in the mouth and it may be one of these and not the strings at all.

I second this. Sounds like something more serious than guitar strings.

that is why I am suggesting seeing a doctor.

sorry about the sarcasm fenderbender. maybe someone will verify this for us. i seem to remember a string that was possibly named "elixer"? it had a coating of some sort that was supposed to make it last longer. i used them a few times and kinda liked them, but they were a little more expensive.
i was serious about the coloration on my fingertips. i work construction and sometimes it's hard to get my hands really clean. sometimes i pick up my fiddle and play when i know my hands are dirty. i'm supposed to play with clean hands and wipe the strings afterward but i seldom do, thus the dirty fingers.
have you tried a medical website that answers questions such as yours?
i hope you figure it out and continue to make music.
