I have a really nice michael kelly limited (some may remember my pics) and I wondered if it takes years for a guitar as good as mine to go vintage. Does it go vintage once it is discontinued or does it go vintage after the year has passed?

If it's like a car, it's something like 25 years. Don't get too hung up on the term vintage. It means nothing. A good guitar is a good guitar regardless of when it's made.

Just like Beloque said in the first Indiana Jones "bury it in the sand for a hundred years and it will become priceless." 8)

25 years is a general rule of thumb for "vintage"but just because something is vintage it doesn't mean that it has value take for instance a 25 yr old Yugo or Walmart guitar.Usually for anything vintage to be worth anything of value depends on several criteria such as Number made and in what colours(custom colours can usually be worth more),years in production, quality of construction and playability and what options and special factory mods were done on it.Any guitar that has been altered after it left the factory will automatically lose a lot of it's value, everything has to be absolutely original.

63supro pretty much nailed it on the head. There are some very sought out guitars that are less than 20 years old.

Antique collectors.
In the 80's they became infatuated with the 50's art deco stuff. Hence the 25-30 year old vintage rule.

Art Deco was 1920-1940.

The 25 year thing might be appropriate (or not) in autos but in guitars I would think it's gotta be closer to 35 years at least, maybe even 40. Somehow I just can't hear myself saying, "That 1985 Strat sure is a really nice vintage guitar..." To me it would just be an older Strat.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Whenever someone wants to buy it for preposterous amounts of money. Until then it is considered old.

When I buy any new guitar, by the time I get to be able to play it very well, it will be vintage.
