does Joe B even use picks? haha, seems like he is always playing with just his fingers when I have seen him.

but according to this website he uses custom made Dunlops, but I cant confirm either way

If you go to EricJohnson.com,they dissect everything the man does....and funny thing is,the man himself couldn't probably dissect it as much....and that's saying ALOT!
Tommy Taylor the drummer who has played with EJ alot says that Eric is always experimenting and sometimes can't duplicate the tones he gets at times.
Just finding out what kind of pick a guy uses is like learning what kind of comb he uses.

red Dunlop Jazz III, there was an article about them awhile back in Guitar World/Player with Joe B. on the cover, which spewed about how much they liked them. I think the cover screamed something like "CAN THIS PICK REALLY MAKE YOU A BETTER PLAYER?"
there was some silly debate between the different feel/sound, Does the red one sound any better than the black one? For what ever reason, the red ones seem to be a little slippery, even though they are made from the same stuff, so i use the black ones.

Hemiram I had the same issue, and to be honest I never saw so much paper given to a story on a pick.

red Dunlop Jazz III

That sounds right.

At a gig Joe was throwing handfuls of picks into the audience at the end of the show (you can tell he's on an endorsement deal). The guy next to me was busting to get one. I had my arms folded - and one landed right in there. I glanced at it and gave it to the guy who wanted it so bad. He grinned from ear to ear - the little dear!

I looked at the pick before handing it over: it was a Dunlop and Jazz III is probably the one. I seem to recall in an interview Joe saying he was miffed that Dunlop couldn't fit "Bonamassa" onto the pick. Which you'd have thought they could...

Regarding his technique: he uses a hybrid style, plectrum between thumb and first finger, second and third fingers also picking the strings for more options.

Cheers - C

The technique of these two guys is so deep, I think the pick is just the tip of the iceberg. Both players talk freely about their equipment and technique, but I still think some of it is kept to themselves. Look at Eddie Van Halen. He was really unique for a while, now 10 year olds do a decent Eruption.

Eric uses those little red Dunlop Jazz picks. So did Danny Gatton. They are great for that type of fast, precise picking. Not so good for playing funk or anything like that, they are too stiff. I like good ole Fender mediums myself.
