Our IT uses Sophos at work and so far it's done a good job of keeping the network and PCs clean. We probably get about one virus issue a month, typically in an emailed file from one of our thousands-a-day emails from clients. Thus far, they've been able to contain it on just the original single PC and before any serious damage has been done.

On that basis, I'm using the same at home on my Vista laptop and so far so good.

Yeah, thanks CV, I have still got the McAfee installed at the moment but I will be removing that in the next few days. I'm still deciding what to replace it with, I've installed the Avast free anti virus program and the Super AntiSpyware. I've been thinking of using the AVG full version program, I haven't been able to download the microsoft security essentials 2010 but it seems they are still testing that yet. So there is plenty to go at.
Even though my pc has stablised now and seems ok, so I'm getting back to normal, it's one of those things I guess, got to take it and move on.
A dose of the Wonkeys perhaps.
Cheers mate.

Good to hear My Friend! I bought a disk to clear My hard drive on the PC that I have sitting here in the office but the virus will not allow either of the disk drives to run the cleaner so that I can wipe clean and reinstall all. Going to take it to Staples repair desk and let them try one day at a cost of $100. (ouch) I sometimes wish I did not install the XP PRO Service pack 3 on it, seemed to run better on service pack 2. I found that pack 3 included all of pack 2's updates along with a few new ones, problem was I did not install known problem updates from 2 that cause issues with other software I am running. Seems that is when it became more unstable plus more acceptable to virus attacks.
None of my PC's or Macs are set up to do automatic update they just let me no when available and I custom install what I want and if you wait a week or two after the updates come out you can check to see if they have caused issue to others before you install. Some can reek havoc on others software.

Rhumba,

Sorry to hear that your computer was hit with a virus. I know it sucks. I have had viruses on my computer before, luckily my antivirus software quarenteened it before it became an issue and I deleted it. Glad to see you are back.

Cheers guys, hey CC it must be great to have a friend like that, he must save you a lot of money. :D

This is just an update ( Woah!! I do not like updates anymore  ) but just to say I've now removed the McAfee and installed the Avast full security suite, 50 quids worth but it should be worth it. I've also got the SuperAntiSpyware free download, I also tried to download the AVG free anti virus but it wasn't compatible with the Avast, so I couldn't. I'll keep a look out for any programs to back up the system with.
Also re-installed Tune-Up Utilities, I had it before but lost it and it's very good for maintenance work, includes defrag, registry cleaner and lots of other useful stuff, it's very good.

So that's it fellas, I'm just about up and running again. Thanks again to all of you for your help and support. I'll buy y'all a drink when I see ya

Hey CV, glad to see your getting your pc fixed. Better than just sitting in the corner catching dust. It's a bummer that you have to pay for someone else's nasty work, I know, just let it pass I guess and move on.
Cheers. 8)
