Actually, all things considered, I think you did rather well but by the same token, that store is not going to forget you either, for better or for worse.

As always, this is merely IMO where YMMV.

It is a real pisser the way the store tried to take you.

BUT, if you paid the $899 thinking that in good faith it really was a new guitar than I'm assuming that the condition of it must have been MINT.

The only thing I would have done is make sure the $200 was in cash and not store credit since they lied about it being new in the first place, etc. And I would have used the small claims thing as leverage to get that done.

But if you're happy with the guitar, that's the biggest thing. Maybe the way you found it/bought it wasn't the best but if it's really the guitar for you than the end result is a good thing.

I'm with CV on this. $899 is stupidly low for that guitar. if they were trying to pass it off as new they sure did a poor job. i have some serious doubts as to the reality of this little tale.

some pictures of the guitar, and the receipts, and the corrections would go a long way to quelling my skepticism.

I don't understand the complaint you got a 52' Telecaster at at half its new cost. For one thats one year old that looks new thats a steal!
I would have known something was wrong the moment someone said it was a new guitar knowing they sell for 1600.00+ and the price on this one was 899. which is a great price for a used one. Where is your complaint? If I was the store I would have gave your money back and priced it more appropriately 1299.

The way things are for small shops they were probably desperate for a sale, anything to keep the business turning over. It sounds to me like Hacker got the guitar for what the store gave the previous owner. I'd say he screwed the shop.

I got one rule for guitar buying. Get the guitar you want at a price that seems reasonable to both parties.

I wouldnt be able to use that shop again for fear that they'd screw me out of revenge.

If you really like the Tele, then you should keep it and use that $200 store credit ASAP!!! The tags, warranty card, and accessaries or lack thereof would have clued me into that it was used. If it was a mediocre guitar, return it for your money back.

Look at it like this, it could have been a simple mistake, or they played you. That's life, it is hard to tell anymore who is doing things right anymore. The real question is, do you like the guitar? Can you live with $200 in store credit?

As for me and what I'd do, I would take that guitar back and get my money back just on pure principle.

Why are you withholding the name of the store ?? I think it would be good to let people know of their dishonesty... I am not sure why you think you owe it to them

This could be considered fraud.. a criminal offense...

Considering a new Vintage 52 Telecaster is a 1600.00 guitar I would say you screwed the store even used it is worth much more then you paid.

I would agree, especially if its hardly been played. It must be in mint condition! Bargain!

You could sell it to me for the price you paid, be completely absolved of anything to do with the guitar. And keep the store credit for yourself.

Deal?

Anyway, I go into one of our local family owned music stores in our town. I won't say where or who, just to be nice.
I spot a Fender Telecaster '52 reissue on the wall for sale. I look at the tag-it says $899 with case. That sounds like a good deal for a new guitar. I try it for a while and end up buying it. They assure me the guitar is new, but they will have to mail me the manuals, warranty card, etc. I take the guitar out on my next gig, and a guy walks up to me on a break and says, "that looks just like my old Tele I just traded in". Well, we talk a while, and he looks at my Tele, and says "this has the same serial number as my old one". I asked him how long he had it and he said about a year, but he said he never played it much, so he traded it in for an acoustic. I took the Tele back to the store, and told them my story, and just how unhappy I was. The store manager said it must of been mis marked or something, and offered me a set of new strings to make up for it. Instead, I told him I wanted a store credit for the difference of what I paid for it as new, and what it should of sold for as used. That came out to about $200. I kept the guitar, but I've never gone back there. I never got my manuals or warranty card either. Did I handle this right, or should I have done it differently?

you handled it. you now have a guitar and 200 dollar store credit (use that ASAP) anything you would like to do now is up to you.
