When I first heard of this, before the internet I may add, the guys said they were "restoring the temper" of the strings.

Now i would imagine that 212 degrees (100C in the civilized world :P ) isn't nearly enough to do so. I think this grew out of someones lack of understanding of the process. possibly someone did a practical joke, that has been wildly successful as to have carried on for decades?

Hence, more, "Infallible Web Dogma".

The first time I heard this and the person probably most responsible for this story is Eddie Vanhalen who I actually think had a lot of fun saying all these things he did, that in reality he never done. So many guys spent a fortune trying to cop his early sound that was just $190 in parts that were seconds and a Gibson 335 Humbucker he yanked out with a Marshall that he said had a special mod that also turned out not to be true. Ted Nugent said it best that when Vanhalen opened up for him he watched Eddies soundcheck and asked him if he could play through his rig to see if there was any trickery and he said that he just sounded like the Nuge and when he handed it to Eddie he sounded like himself.

All these stories are just that -stories yet you get guys plunking down 25K for a clone of Eds $190 guitar or now who knows what Gibson is going to charge for the Slash Appetite for Destruction Les Paul which was not even a Gibson but a copy. And the guys that spend tens of thousands of dollars for vintage guitars that were basically new guitars when the artist recorded with them. I mean Hendrix used 2 or 3 year old guitars when he recorded, The Beatles always used new gear off the shelf and Blackie was three new Strats mixed. I wonder how many guys tried that one.

The first musical instrument store I ever worked in, the owner always used to say to me, "People love to be ripped off." He was talking about exactly the same stuff you've stated above.

Martian a lot of guys with to much money I feel think that by spending huge sums on these pieces it is somehow going to get them to play more like there idols which we all have. But it always reminds me of a story from back in the day when I played organized baseball. There was this kid who would show up with a $150 glove and $100 bat and my friend Richie said to bad he cant buy talent.

And there it is!

He also meant that if one pays a significant amount of money for a given instrument, by virtue of the price paid, the purchaser is convinced that by necessity the instrument cannot be a POS. Conversely, if one spend a modest sum on an instrument, by the identical reasoning, it cannot be very good.

Imagine how bad he would be without a good ball glove? High quality baseball gloves do help one catch better because design of pocket and more subtle fine tooled leather used flexibility of heel design padding. Don't even start on bats with the high end aluminum alloy bats made now days that make a ball fly and then you get the wooden bat with the weight relief it the barrel top and thinned down handles big knobs.
My ball glove was around $300 Mizuno Pro infield I also have a Nokona. Being old like I am I need all the help I can get when playing catch with My Son.
