No grilling! Just boil them until they stick when you throw one against the wall! Then it's done! :D

A little thing I learned in college.

You are entertaining what I call, "Infallible Web Dogma". That is, a tale or practice of utter nonsense passed along (usually via the internet) by people who for reasons known only to themselves, will vehemently defend whatever it is they are trying to proclaim. Sure, boiling strings might lift some crud off of them but water saturating them and heating them to 212 degrees F, does this sound like it is a good thing to do to the alloys string sets are made of? If you're looking for a good excuse to remove your strings and clean the bass, this surely isn't one of them; forget it!

The 212 degrees probably does not affect the strings that much since the melting point of steel and nickel is beyond 2600 degrees...I'm no metallurgist but I could see the heating as sort of renewing the metal somehow, sort of like when you re-flow a solder joint that has gone cold...

Also, stainless steel doesn't rust, and nickel plated steel will eventually with time...so while it sounds crazy to saturate metal in water, it may not be that harmful either...

When I used to use a Floyd Rose, I would put a new set of strings in the freezer overnight before changing them, because you would not have to stretch at all most of the time after doing a string change...I don't know how or why it works, but it just did...

Am I to interpret this as boiling strings may make them new again?

Admittedly, I can't recite the physics equations behind this but I'm sure that somehow, the magnetic properties of the strings has been changed which in effect, segues on a tangent to your first statement.

Evidently it affects something as GHS has made themselves a gold mine with their cryogenic string line.

I can only assume that boiling a string "may" act as a sort of heat treat operation. Let me make an analogy here.

I worked for a major manufacturer of aircraft engines for 36 years. We produced blades and vanes for turbine (jet) engines. Typically, we used a lot of exotic metals like titanium and inconel and some aluminum and copper.

After all of the machining operations were complete, from forging to final dovetail machining, end trim, tip grind, etc... the parts all went into an oven at relatively low temperature (450 °F) for about eight hours. The result? Stress relief! The stresses put in the molecules of the part from all of the bending and cutting were released by long exposure to mild temperature and slow cooling.

Boiling strings "may" (and I'm more than a little pessimistic about this) relieve some of the working stresses built up in the strings. Anything is possible. I am not a metallurgist.

When I first heard of this, before the internet I may add, the guys said they were "restoring the temper" of the strings.

Now i would imagine that 212 degrees (100C in the civilized world :P ) isn't nearly enough to do so. I think this grew out of someones lack of understanding of the process. possibly someone did a practical joke, that has been wildly successful as to have carried on for decades?

A friend of mine used to boil his strings then wipe them down with a cloth he sprayed with WD-40.

He swore by it.

Me, I just put new ones on when the old ones go dead.

Will have to try that! Anything to make it go easier.

I've heard of bass players boiling strings. I don't think it's worth the aggravation. If you can't afford less than $5 a set for strings, maybe we should look for an instrument to play like a kazoo or something.

I still get strings 3 sets for 10 bucks.
