Now I've heard about those briefly numerous times but never had enough info to actualy try it. My squier jazz bass has flatwound strings and to make strings go longer I hear you boil them-

So do you just drop them in some water, boil them, then dry and Put them back on?

What's the point of it and does it work?

Thanks if you can help. I hear it for both guitar and bass strings so figured this forum was a good mix to ask. The strings now are pretty fine but I want an excuse to take um off and clean the bass. So any info would help!

Thanks, will p

You are entertaining what I call, "Infallible Web Dogma". That is, a tale or practice of utter nonsense passed along (usually via the internet) by people who for reasons known only to themselves, will vehemently defend whatever it is they are trying to proclaim. Sure, boiling strings might lift some crud off of them but water saturating them and heating them to 212 degrees F, does this sound like it is a good thing to do to the alloys string sets are made of? If you're looking for a good excuse to remove your strings and clean the bass, this surely isn't one of them; forget it!

My personal train of thought on this is:

Strings get dirty then replace them.

Guitar gets dirty then clean it.

I am with you Chet even if they are costly flat wounds change them.

I seem to remember reading an article about Billy Gibbons(ZZTop) boiling his strings in BBQ sauce...but I think it was a joke.

The preceding is the exact opposite of, "Infallible Web Dogma."

Lol ok thanks this is why I aske first! I heard it numerous tomes in little detail on the p bass forum. I clean the bass often but there is dust in spots unreachable with the strings on, like in the routed pickup holes.

Not a big deal but if it truly worked I would have tried it!

Thanks a lot!

The George Forman Grill works better than boiling. This way you keep them flat

And from what I understand, it runs off all the oil and grease too!

Boiling your strings won't hurt them and will clean them better than wiping... but they will still be old strings. But if you can't afford a new set of strings, why not just try it and see... then you can let us know!

There's no special technique required - just stick em in boiling water.

But here's a thought... has anyone ever tried putting bass strings in a dishwasher? They'd get a good clean at high temperature! Hey, this could be a brand new bit of internet wisdom - "Put your Bass strings in the dishwasher to make them good as new and last twice as long"!! lol Somebody try it, please! :D
