I have heard a few new songs with a solo in them. I hope it is coming back, I miss the days of new Rock/Metal songs without solos.

I haven't heard a decent solo out of any new artists. The only solos I've heard lately have come from bands from back in the day who are releasing new music, which is a good thing :)

have to agree that guitar solo's were always here depending on what style of music. the newer styles don't use them because the new artists aren't musicians, not criticizing, just that a lot of it sounds like wannabe preachers or wannabe actors trying to imitate musicians.

I only listen to guitar based music and since HipHop and Tween bubble gum is being forced on the public that is irrelevant to me. Just listen to Orianthi's last single, though she caught a bad break with the passing of Jackson her label has her cutting some poppy stuff but she shredded allover it and it was a big hit which proves people still dig the guitar. I do not listen to the radio but my wife loves that song and says that whenever it is on in the car the DJs go off on how that is her playing.

As far as Metallica Lars always seemed to be the business guy in the group, and he was just trying to follow the grunge wave of no soloing as to be popular and that did not go over well with the fans. Over 80% of Grunge groups did not solo because they did not know how to, half of them were lucky if they were in tune.

Straycat- have you listened to "Death Magnetic"? I reckon its the best album to date-

I think the biggest mistake a band can do is think their music is outdated as far as guitar is concerned. The issue with metallica, is that if they just made albums like they allways have done (Kill, Ride, Master, Justice) they would have done good. As soon as the Black Album came out, they inherited a new breed of fan that thought "LOAD" was utter garbage. (which it was)

Take AC/DC for example- they have never strayed from the core rock and roll intro-verse-chorus-solo-verse-outro and they have soloed all through it right up to date. They've stayed true to the music they make and thats really whats been missing all this time. They have many fans that span many generations now.

Red Hot Chillis are an example of a band that have tried to adapt-, and have done succesfully. The issue is, the bass player and the guitarist are allways in arguements about guitar over bass solos and stuff... and it will be the end of them I must say.

I guess if bands just stay true to what they play- it really doesnt matter whether or not a solo is there or not.
