Twelvebar Newfoundlanders sing Irish music because their forebears brought it over from Ireland in the 18th and 19th century and it has been passed down through the generations. The area that I live in is known as The Irish Loop as it stretches 200 miles around the coast and 98% of the people here can trace their roots directly back to Ireland. Many of the dozens of dialects on the loop are almost identical to dialects in parts of Ireland. When Newfoundlanders go abroad they are often asked if they are Irish as our accents are quite similar especially in certain pockets of the province. Many linguists, folklorists and anthropologists have come to Nfld. to research the similarities of our language and cultures.Nfld has long been steeped in Celtic music and culture as it is our heritage. So when you think that our singers try to sound Irish they don't have to try,it comes naturally.

I know, guitslinger, I guess I should have been more precise in my typing. I meant the 'non' to apply to both Irish, and Newfoundlanders. I can see how I didn't express that properly. we have people here that try it and fail, miserably. it's a type of music you just can't fake.

I love Newfoundland music. We have a vibrant Newfoundlander community here. there's a big Newfoundland themed bar close to me, always a big party.

didn't mean to get your hackles up, but i was actually trying to include you guys in the authentic part of the comparison.

No offence taken Twelvebar, our accents sound so Irish that some people do think that we try to do it but it's the years of practice lol.BTW where I'm involved in the music community here I've reached my saturation point for Newfoundland music and can only handle it in small doses now.I do like some traditional NL groups though such as:The Once,The Fables,Figgy Duff and Rawlins Cross but I can't take to Great Big Sea.

GBS are a nice bunch of guys though!

I had a NFLD'er roomie for a couple years(he and his friends didn't have the aversion some seem to have at being called Newfies,) I got to listen to a lot of music i would otherwise never hear. i got him into stuff like lenny breau whom i know you also enjoy. Sometimes when they'd get loaded their accents would get so strong i couldn't understand 'em.

I know what you mean by not being able to understand them, there are places in Newfoundland where the accents are so thick that even I can't understand them and to add to that they have local euphemisms and talk so fast that only someone from the same community can understand them. As a matter of fact foreign doctors that come here often need someone to translate what they are saying(that's the absolute truth). The term Newfie is really a subject of discussion and many arguments here, some hate it and some don't mind but it originated in WWII when American servicemen stationed here used it in a derogatory manner, the biggest insult one soldier could give another was to say he was stupid as a Newfie,so needless to say it's refered to as the other "N" word. Sean and Alan and the boys from GBS are great guys and are great ambassadors for the province,Sean's cousin is a real good friend or mine, who also is a good musician.GBS has done fabulous work raising money to fight cancer, they've raised countless thousands of dollars.I guess the biggest problem with their music is that it's so overplayed moreso than Stairway to Heaven,so it's another case of over saturation.

If they were from an area in Ireland similar to Liverpool, probably about the same.

Funny thing is I'm Scottish  But I've lived here many years. As long as they didn't sound like U2, that'd be grand!
