I like techno, real techno from 91-96/7, before it was infiltrated by over stylized cokeheads and men who prefer men. It lost all its darkness when them lot got in on it.

Nothing better to dance like a loony to, for 9 hours straight, in a quarry in Wales.

I had some fantastic times as a kid.

So today, my friend turned on some techno in enlgish class. As soon as I heard it I asked him politely to turn it off, then he just turns to me and says "at least this is music, not like that rock you listen to". It ended up breaking into an argument, his 3 big complaints were "at a party you can't dance to rock" another was "in rock music videos there aren't any half naked girls" and the other one "all rock is, is some idiot screaming into a mic". My response to this was "a monkey could make techno, it takes no talent at all, but for rock you need to be good at an instrument, not a pushing a button". After it was all over my friend turns to his girlfriend and says "are you gonna back me up?" she then responded "no, I agree with him".
So since when is rock not considered music?

Rock is music. Techno is music. Some people like the former, some the latter, some both, some neither.

You both were in a pointless argument.

The kid might come around someday. I did. I didn't much care for rock when I was a kid. I was a weird kid who listened to classical and orchestral music soundtracks. By junior high and high school I was somewhat aware of 80s pop because Eddie Hernandez, the bus driver, played it on the way to and from school. I also realized pretty early on that I had a fondness for Pink Floyd.

Honestly, it wasn't until adulthood that I began to really appreciate the full scope of what rock had to offer, everything from metal to surf to psychobilly. And after a lifetime of assuming I disliked country music, I've suddenly discovered I really like Johnny Cash. Go figure. So, shorter version: the kid may come around on his own one day. It happens.

Disclaimer: I actually do like some of what folks would probably consider techno. I find some of Juno Reactor's stuff to be very interesting, for instance.

Now why do you have to come along and inject a voice of reason into a good row?

As for the girl, she's one of my closest friends, and I just don't think of her that way.

Dude, one thing I have learned in my years--and have had reinforced very recently--is that the best relationships you will ever have all start out as friendships. Go slow. Just go to the mall with her for an afternoon. It's just like jamming: Get into a groove, watch her for your cues, and see where things go. And just have fun! As long as you don't get ahead of her, the friendship will not suffer.

Don't be like me and wake up 30 years later, full of regret for what might have been. Go for it! 8)

Oh! One more thing: Remember always to tell a smart girl she's pretty, and tell a pretty girl she's smart.

Dude, the argument was that the other guy said that rock isnt music that was the argument! GO ME!'s arguement was that it takes a higher skilled individual to produce rock though!:P sorry to appearto feel the need to correct people but i saw it and thought maybe we could staighten that out :)

Why people have the unearthly urge to challenge each other on the types of music they listen to is, quite personally, way over my head. People make such fools of themselves when they bash their peers for liking other kinds of music, and really, since when does it matter? It's like getting mad at someone for having a different eye color. :?

Some years ago (70's or thereabout) for an interview with Guitar Player magazine the late Andres Segovia, noted flamenco/classical guitarist basically claimed that modern music in general was not real music, and that electric guitars were not real musical instumens. He pretty much crapped on everything, from jazz to country to rock and everything else.
There are elitist snobs in all musical interests, always have been, always will be.
