A few minutes ago while I was on the Forum the dog started going snakey and barking,I paid no attention as I thought it was the cats messing with her again. My wife came home a couple of minutes later and asked if the dog had been acting up I told her that she had. There were 2 huge moose in our driveway and my wife had to wait for them to move before she came in and the dog could sense or smell that they were there.Moose are regular visitors around here and wreak havoc on my flowers in the summer, beautiful but very destructive. One great thing about living in the boonies is being surrounded by wildlife rabbits, foxes, ruffed grouse and countless other birds as just off the beach by our house is the 3rd largest seabird colony in the world.Bill Gates doesn't have enough money to entice me away from my seaside paradise.

guitslinger= Dude, that is so cool. I want that in my life. Nature rocks.

Beauty is truth, they say.

I'm selective about it, though. No crocodiles. They're scary.
Whoever said "God shed his grace on thee" was right. North America has it all: Big wild animals, the breadbasket of the world, and, up until my party messed things up, industry. I guess war is the new blue collar.

I'm definately coming up to Canada this summer.

I hear it is best to give the moose some space. :)

I have spent a lot of time admiring nature. Here is a story for you:

I was fishing on the inside of the breakwater in Dana Point Harbor, CA. Just sitting on the rocks, right by the water. All of a sudden, dozens of green crabs (bodies about the size of a silver dollar) came running out of the water. They ran right over me in a big hurry. Then, here comes a big octopus, right up out of the water. It was flinging it's arms after the fleeing crabs with me right in the middle. When the octopus realized I was there, it just backed up, nice and slow, back into the harbor.

no big animal visitors here this time of year other than the beached whale sized tourist women soaking up their rays in bikinis.

yeah i live out on 30 acres in the middle of nowhere in northern California, the worst was when my nephew left the studio door open after he was done drumming and one of our neighbors horses decided to wander in there well it couldn't figure out how to get out, it panicked and started kicking and ramming things to get out, destroyed about $3,000 of studio recording equipment, luckily steve (the owner of the horse) was willing to pay for it all and my nephew was more than happy to clean up the mess(sarcastic tone)

I've seen two bull moose fighting (sparring) during their rut. They are a huge beast and quite a sight to behold when they are antler to antler.

We, as in Canada, can get a permit to take one with a rifle during the designated season. Limited numbers are taken to maintain a viable population suitable to the available habitat.

I would never apply for a permit. I used to hunt but have not done so in about 7 or 8 years. Anyway, you could liken a moose hunt to walking up and shooting a Buick. They are fearless and, unlike whitetail deer, do not generally run.

Stratobobster- After an experience like that, my first response would be to go home and take a shower.

CV I was just going to suggest that he have you stay over.

Animals soon get wise, especialy when the lawn is littered with carcass's.

I don't live in the wilderness by any means but I do live on the edge of undeveloped acearage and its common to see Deer, Turkey, and various other smaller mammals in and around.
I used to see alot of field mice and rabbits in the backyard but they haven't been as prevelant as they used to be. Yesterday I found out why...

Went to the shed to get a spade (planting new shrubs) and there was a nice black rat snake about 4 ft long coiled up on the shelf next to the spade. I got the spade and he didn't so much as blink. Ignored me like he owned the place. I tried to coax him into a bucket with my rake but he would have none of it and proceeded to slither under the cabinet on the ground. I think I'll call him Charlie and let him stick around. Rat snakes are common to this area, nonpoisonous, and beneficial as long as you don't let them nest near or under your house. Much better than Copperheads who are poisonous and I have killed one on my property in the past.

 I just kept fishing.

At San Onofre State Beach, I dug a octopus out of the sand at low tide. I spotted lighter colored sand he was blowing up when he breathed. I had his body in my right hand and his tentacles reached my shoulder. He started turning in my hand and I had to get rid of him before he got his beak on me. They eat shellfish and can bite the heck out of you.

I had to pay a lot of money to go there and shoot a Moose 1600. for guide only but it was a lot less then a Goat hunt and I mean a lot less.

We have such a proliferation of moose that they have become one of the major causes of collisions, injuries and deaths on our highways. The powers that be are dragging their feet in dealing with the problem, the idea of increasing hunting licenses is being bandied about. If the government increases licenses hunters from the US and mainland Canada would be in for a treat because for some reason the moose here are much larger than those in the rest of North America.
