I was wondering what software, audio interface, and mic are good to record with and are affordable? I want to start recording myself play to hear the nuances and imperfections in my technique. Any help is appreciated.

I use a Line 6 Toneport with Garage Band. It's a good set up for me, but if you want to record an entire band eventually you may want to look into other options as well.

cwillia8, welcome to the Forum! I do most of my recording at Studio Chicago
http://www.studiochicago.com/
because I need all of the professional help that I can get when recording, this is definitely the place to ask the question, most of the Bros here do home recording ( there are many threads about home recording gear) this seems to be a good software choice:

have fun and let us hear your music when it is recorded!

Not sure what your budget is or how many tracks you need to record at a time, but i'm a big fan of Digidesign Protools. For about 300 bucks you can get the Mbox Mini which comes with Protools LE. If all you need is one mic input and a couple of 1/4" line ins it can be a good solution. I like the PT software because its very intuitive and if you find yourself needing to go back and forth between a studio and your house its probably what they would be using and would be easily mobile between the two.

Also, if you are running windows and have a CPU that has a PCI slot (most have PCI X or PCI-E nowadays) you can probably find an old DIGI 001 on Ebay. That is what i have. If you are on MAC you will be effed by having to run an older OS which can get wierd depending on what hardware you have.
You'll only be able to run up to PTLE version 6.4 but it might be all you need and for 150 bucks you get 2 focusrite Mic Pre's, and 6 line ins, 8 line outs, ADAT in and SPDIF in.

Hope that helps too

good luck

I use Line6 TonePort too with either the Line6 software, GuitarRig II or Fender Amplitube and record with Cubase SX 3.

Sometimes I mic up my Champ 600 or even my DeVille 410 and use my pedals and the beauty of my Acoustasonic 30 is that it has a line out which is handy!

You could get a new G-DEC 3 and just start recording with all that comes with it.

I have a small mixer, M-Audio interface and use Ableton software currently. Mics are Shure SM57 and 58s.
