Jimi didn't invent it, but he sure knew how to use it.

thanks for posting this Mike, I haven't seen it before, is that Billy Cox on bass guitar?

mondo500 got it, it is a 9th and you make it sound to fit the song by only playing the strings you want heard, my cousin showed it to me when I was 12 or 13 y/o, pbassz816 was also right on when he wrote "Jimi didn't invent it, but he sure knew how to use it." there is a song on LZs Houses of the Holy album that sure sounds like the other Jimmy is using that chord a lot although it may have always been wishful thinking on my part.

Well it is just called the Hendrix chord as he used it so much and brought it to the attention of a lot of rock players. It is a great chord to groove on and is even in the breakdown part of Born to be Wild besides a ton of others. If you go from E than Db with the same shape and add some bass notes you can jam forever.

BlackCatBone the first chord you printed out was an open E7 chord but if you flatten your pinkie to also play the G on the 3rd fret of the high E string it is another inversion of an E7#9.

Sorry people the 7#9 was a staple jazz chord long before Jimi landed on the scene. He popularized into rock music, nothing more, he didnt invent it.

I've used that chord millions of times playing blues and I didn't learn it from Jimi,he picked it up from the same places I did, from older R&B and jazz guys like you mentioned.
I guess us older guys who were playing when Jimi did forget that now, after 40 some odd years, young people don't really know what Hendrix's background was....that he "invented" those things.
Like somebody said,he didn't invent it but he knew how to use different chords, phrasing and feedback to create tension and other interesting moods that you just didn't hear in "top 40 music" back then.
To call that the "Hendrix chord" is ridiculous.

The song that really sticks out in my head where this chord is used is "All Blues" by Miles Davis on the Kind of Blue album (1959) ....

But really it is used A LOT in jazz...

I never thought of the chord as being a big deal... It sounds good... But there are many more unusual chords that make music more creative...

Hey, I didn't realize you posted about it here about the so called "Hendrix chord". I just talked about it in my "Music theory" thread.
It is an interesting topic!

i didnt know you had to tune down, i always played it in standard tuning, i will have to try that tonight and see how it sounds as I havent messed around with a lot of tunings.

Mike any idea what the name of the chord I posted above is or is it even a chord? Sorry, newbie question..I think it has to be some kind E and 7? not sure.

I call it an Eb7#9....if playing without dropped tuning E7#9.
Its an “E” Chord with both major and minor 3rds!
The major 3rd is just a 3rd but
The minor 3rd is actually a #9 – no really!
Jimi would use this as a root chord (in the key of E)
Stevie Ray would play it as a dominant 7th (in the key of Am)
Get jazzy! ..add a Bb in the bass between the E7#9 and the Am.

Hi Mike! I like your comment here! Very...logical!
I have just tried to explain it in my "Music theory" thread. As a root chord, in the key of E. But, you gave me an idea what to think about and how to explain some stuff. Thanks man! I just need to take my English to an upper level if I want to pull it off as I imagined. Can hardly explain it in English if I don't know what certain terms mean in English music literature.
I better do my research on English "music language". Hope you understand what I mean.
Hey, if you feel anything should be added in my post on this topic, please feel free to share on "Music theory"!

If you look closely to the footage(Ihave the original Rainbow Bridge video that it came from)you'll see that Jimi isn't playing in an E7 formation but is in fact playing in F# on the second fret(technically F where he's tuned down a half tone)I have disected every bit of Jimi's performances I could get hold of and Foxey Lady was always done in F#.
