so the other day i was jamming after school with a few of my buds and this kid walks in and says "nice strat, is that a Fender?" i say "yeah" he asks "how much did you buy it for?" i tell him around $430, he goes "wow that cheap?" i said yeah. He then asks if it was an American or Mexican and I tell Mexican, he then says its a piece of crap and not a real Fender guitar. So i proceed to look at the headstock, i see the Fender logo, the serial number, and the model number. So I wonder, what is the deal with a Mexican made Fender? I mean $430 is not that cheap and both my tele and strat are Mexican made, I've got no problems with each. The strat is 2yrs old and no need of repair and i just got the tele for christmas and its a beauty. So what is the difference between an American and a Mexican? Quality? Whatever the case both of my mexican guitars and beautiful sounding and i love both of them but if someone could clear this up for me it would be appreciated

sorry for rambling lol

love means not having to say you're sorry Bro, my take on that is Fender was going to save by building a factory in Mexico, what they forgot was if you let a Mexican or Spaniard or any Latin person build you a guitar it will sound better because it is their instrument for all practical purposes and that is why made in Mexico Fender guitars and bass guitars sound sweeter and may even have better sustain qualities as well.

I've got a USA G&L Legacy and a MIM tele with some 54' nocaster Pups and I love they equally. I've never had a complaing about my tele ever and I didn't have to spend the extra 1000 to get the tone I was looking for.

Great point about SRV. It's the player, not the equipment that makes the real difference.

Stick the guitar up his $@! and then ask 'how real does that feel?'

"How does it feel? It hurts like h&ll, but I prefer MIA!!!!...."

The $1000.00 spread in price has to account for something, brethren.

Mexico is 4 hours away from the Corona plant..... You are paying an extra 500 dollars for that drive.

I love my Mexican Strat.

In fact some of the most beloved Strats are the Japanese Reissues from the 80's so i figure if Fender brands it with a Fender and it goes through quality control...

It is a real Stratocaster as opposed to an artificial one....One not bearing the Fender name and serial number oh and the word Stratocaster.

I will do not consider Squier an official Stratocaster though.

Oh, I agree but I still count the Mexicans, Koreans and Japanese as REAL Fenders. They aren't the top of the line but in no way are they not real Fender guitars.

Then we're in agreement. Real, but inferior. Which is what the rather rude kid was implying in the first post.

Plus, Mexicans killed Davy Crockett and Jim Bowie. I'm just sayin'...

Really, guitar snobbery is silly. As long as one is moving forward musically,
it's all that matters.

That said, remember the Alamo, and step up to American Deluxe.

I think the big mistake a lot of folks make is that, even though the American made Fenders are better, that does not mean the Mexican guitars are crap. They are just cheaper, with some cheaper parts (not necessarily bad parts) and with cheaper labor (again, not necessarily bad labor). It's an attitude inculcated into the American psyche by big business that more expensive means better quality, which is absolutely not true, whether it's guitars, cars, kitchen gadgets, or whatever. I'm always seeing product comparisons on TV for all kinds of items, where products are tested and reviewed by focus groups (with some amount of expertise, usually), and almost always the most expensive item NEVER wins first place.
As far as Fender guitars go, I've yet to see anyone who prefers American made guitars over MIMs that they have owned, say anything bad about the MIMS. All I ever see is that they liked the MIAs better, which is NOT saying the MIMS were garbage.
And I suspect in some few cases a bit of racism is involved, with some thinking that Mexicans couldn't POSSIBLY make anything as good as an American could. Which, of course, is utter garbage.

Take no notice, Man, it's just jealousy & ignorance speaking. The main thing is, are you happy with your instruments and the way they play & sound? If the answer is yes then the opinions of others, for whatever their reasons, don't matter.

I've got to remember that one.

I've been told that my Squier Strat is sh*t. Literally, they said that. But I know it's not and I love it. So much that I've even modified it with Texas Specials and improved electronics. If you blindfolded someone and played the same song on it and a Fender, I don't think that that person would be able to tell which is which. I also have a MIM Fender that I love. I like it and my Squier better than some MIA Fenders, I wouldn't trade even if I could. That said MIA Fenders are extremely nice and someday I would like one.

And by the way, $430 isn't cheap. $430 can buy you a great guitar.

I agree with everyone else - doesn't matter a bit what you play.

Seasick steve ^^ cheap crap guitar with two strings on it, cheap amp, lots of soul. He's stomping on an old box for percussion. Doesn't get much simpler or better.

Stratocaster built in Ensenada by Mexican workers vs. Stratocaster built in Corona by Mexican workers. 'Nuff said. 8) The rest is psychological not geographical.

I own guitars made by FMIC under the brands of Fender, Squier and Jackson. They are made in;
USA
Mexico
Japan
Indonesia
China
Korea
India
FMIC is an international company. You have to look at it from a modern standpoint. We live in a global society today. Rednecks usually only venture as far as their local Wal-mart and beer store, and don't have any idea that there is a big world out there!!!
I would have just unleashed a torrent of high decibel notes and impressed him with my playing on my "crap" Mexican Strat, but that is just me!!

It's about that the kid has some pre concieved notion on what a real fender and is trying to assert his dominace which is really him showing off that he is blatantly insecure. The only man who can tell you if it's a real fender is the man himself, mr. Fender. My question for you is did you ask that kid to play your guitar and see if he has the chops to even say jive lime that? Or ask him what kind of guitar he has?

Take the "made in - " out of the equation and what are you left with? A bunch of guitars with slightly different specs at a range of price points. Choose the specs you like at the price you like.

Then play.

Cheers - C
