They attenuate the louder frequecies to make the quieter ones seem louder. That way you can turn the overall volume up and not blow your speakers or ears. Country players like 'em cuz they cut the loud chicken pickin down a bit so the lite note peak thru.
Compressors do howerver kill you dynamic a bit. Plug into one and turn it up and just try to play quiet. There won't be any space between you loud notes and your softer ones. That is depending on how you have the comprssor set. What compressors do not do is just "make everything louder" remember they are a dynamic attenuator. So the loud sounds get attenuated so you have to turn your overal level up. That's where the misconception comes in.

I forgot to mention you can use them as a clean boost also. Turn the sistain All the way down and output up and you will overdrive you pre-amp tubes. Good for blues or to make singlecoils sound fatter.

the dyno comp is popular esp. the older ones, but i like the super comp better. But imo the best one out there is the 4 lnob keeley, it is clean and really adds balls to ur tone.......i run one all the time
