I have owned 2 Epi Sheraton's (335 model) and 2 Les Paul copies which
i upgraded with Seymour Duncan and DiMarzio pickups.
They all played very well but the LP's are easier to upgrade because
with the Sheraton's the pots and switches can only be reached through the
"F" holes on top of the body.

Greetings,

Peter

All are great guitars. My personal favorite is the Les Paul, because it is the most versatile I feel. It can have great classic tone, and is possible to twang, but also has a nice full and rich crunch. I prefer it over the SG for form and feel, personally it just feels better. However, this was a higher end Epi LP, matched to a higher end Epi SG. The SG didn't feel right sitting on my lap, but I'm sure it would be good strapped on. The SG also is more for plain crunch, or at least thats how it feels when I play it.

The Dot is a quality guitar, and I have always wanted one. I like the Dot studio, but if I had the dough I'd get a Casino. However they are different beasts. The Dot is 335 style, with a center block, and the Casino has no center block, its completely hollow. The Dot studio has good hardware on it, and is cheap too.

I would like either an LP custom, as it is very good quality, I would not suggest the LP Special II or the other lower end guitars, even though they are good for what they are, they just lack that oomph that the Custom has. The Standard is also very good, I just like the looks of the Custom. Another one I'd like is the 3 pickup monster, those sound great, both in LP and SG forms.

Hope that helps!

I have the Epi Dot Deluxe. P/Us can get a little muddy sometimes and the switch is horrible, but it plays well, sounds good, and compared to the ES-335 it's a steal. The Gibson is about 6 1/2 times more expensive. A lot of people change the pickups, but at most settings they aren't that bad.

Would love to get a Sheraton unless Fender comes back with a reissue of an old Master Series model like the Esprit.

i have an epiphone elitist line les paul and its an amazing guitar..... i would go with a les paul, but thats just my opinion... the customs are very nice guitars as well and they look very good as well

the only real complaint i have with epiphones is the wiring in them... mine (and many others) have poor wiring in them... i use my toggle switch as a kill switch occasionally and the sounds somewhat cuts out now.... the may be the only problem, but if you do get one, i would suggest just getting a new one in and invest in it so you're sure it doesnt cut out at a gig or something

I've got an Epi Dot Studio. Put in some Seymour Duncan Phat Cat P-90s. Great guitar, I can't believe it was only $200. I'd recommend one to anyone with a spare $200. I use it often and it sits proudly with other guitars worth thousands more.

^ agreed, you can often find some relatively cheap used ones, put some great pickups in it for the price of a new one, and you have yourself a great guitar

I bought my son a g400 SG model on Black Friday for Christmas this year. After the discount it was $240 before tax. I took it home, removed the old strings, polished it up, added new strings and played it for a good jam through my amp. It played and soiunded great. I like those humbucker pickups.

Some of the Epi guitars can be real winners. As with any guitar purchase I would suggest going out and playing some before you buy.

No doubt about this as with any guitar or amp. There's good ones and bad ones of everything out here.

I've found that Epis have to be gone over with a fine tooth comb before buying. The quality control is slacking alittle. Not quite as good as Fender in my opinion. I figure there's about 1 in 5 Epis that turn out great (or worth buying).

I would definetly have an Epi though. It's the closest thing to a Gibson without having to take out a loan.

I know I spent about two hours in my local GC trying out at least 7 or 8 Epi LPs before I purchased mine. It's a great guitar, but boy I miss my Gibby 1970 LP Deluxe  If I had the money for a Gibson, I would look into the LP Studio - actually a very nice guitar without the frills.

I have a Epiphone Les Paul Custom. I love everything about it, but it's so damn heavy! But, my friend has Epi LP and it is extremely light, and I don't know exactly what guitar you're talking about. But I would get an LP before an SG or the Dot.

I think that first off you need to decide what type of sound you're looking for. Which guitar feels most comfortable to YOU when you're playing. The Les Pauls will be heavier (quite a bit) than Strats or nearly anything else. I don't think that 9 or 10 pounds is that big of a problem, especially with the right strap, but YOU might not like it. As others have said, go to GC and play a bunch. When you decide on a STYLE of guitar, then start looking for the best one there. That, of course, will be very subjective as what appeals to any of US might not appeal to YOU. You won't go wrong with an Epi. In general, the quality is very good, especially for the price. I would strongly suggest that you have the guitar professionally set up unless you can do that sort of thing yourself. Good strings, a properly adjusted nut and bridge, and the Epi will play as well as anything short of a $3,000 guitar. The standard setups done at the factory or at a GC are really not very good in most cases. Find someone you trust to set it up the way you like it. Both of my Epi Les Pauls (and my Epi "Lucille" before I sold it) have been set up properly and they sound good and play beautifully. Once you get the instrument set up the way you like it, then consider upgrading the hardware. For the money, the stock parts are pretty good (OK, not he pickup switch :? ), but if you're like everybody else around here, "stock" just ain't good enough! Good luck and tell us what you end up with!
