Do the camp, friend, if you've been talking about starting a band for 3 years and still haven't done it the camp might bolster your enthusiasm a bit. And, of course, you might meet a drummer who can.

Good luck....K.

Ok me and my friends were planning on starting a band next summer, give the drummer time to get better as he's just starting. Now I found a camp this summer, called School Of Rock, a bunch of cool stuff to do there. They teach you rock history, and stuff like that, you get to record an original song (not profesinally), but they put you in a band with a bunch of random people that you've never met. I don't know what to do, I think this camp would be good for me but my friends and I have been talking about starting a band for about 3 years now, it got us all to take our lessons more seriously. What should I do?
Oh by the way, this is the last year I can attend the camp because of age.

Thanks

When I was 13 and had been playing guitar for six months completely self taught I went to one of those rock camps (called Dayjams). I learned a lot and looking back on it I think that for me it was the turning point between being scared to play guitar outside of my bedroom to wanting to play in a band.

If this is the last year you can attend that's even more of a reason to go. Why don't you start a band and go to camp? Have your cake and eat it too. :D

By the way, I attended that camp every year until I was too old for it. Now I go to Austin for National Guitar Workshop and it's something I look forward to just as much.

I wish I had that option when I was starting out.

There's no reason you can't do both.

Playing in a band with help & getting to perform & record?
Go for it.

that's valuable experience right there--and will help you in your own band as well.

Stop talking about it and do it, start a band. Now, this afternoon, not in 2 months time. Get your mates and find somewhere where you can make some noise and spend this afternoon making a unholy row.

Band started.

Worry about everything else afterwards.

Last chance to do the camp. Start the band upon arriving home. You'll be pumped about it by looking forward to it and your mates will have a bit more time to prepare. Your drummer can learn "on the fly" by doing your song sets and you can give him help by letting him know what you all expect from him. 8)

Go to the camp and start your band with your buddies when you get home. Best of both worlds.

I'd go to the camp. Sounds fun and it will give you a taste of what is ahead and learn a little about the profession. Good luck. If you go to camp, have fun.

This one time at band camp.... Sorry, couldnt resist!

Like everyone else has said. Do both! bring your new found skills home and share them with your bandmates. That way everyone can benifit. Best of luck!

Go to the camp, chances to join bands will come and go as often as you change strings.Never pass up a chance to broaden your knowledge of music also at camp you may meet up with other musicians that are more into your musical preferences than your current friends. You also may meet a drummer that doesn't need to get better to play in a band.Good Luck with it.

I'd say go to the camp. You might meet other players who are just alot more passionate about it, or you might realize your pretty good at guitar cause everyone else there who plays is crap. :)

i say hit up the camp. it'll be a good experience for you as an individual and also you'll learn a lot that you can bring to a band when you do join one.

That's true. When you're starting out it's easy to think that the band you're in will last forever, or to think that you'll never be offered a sport anywhere else. But bands do come and go, fast. I've been a member of about eight or nine different bands so far. Right now I'm in two (going on three, another is forming) plus I get to sit in and jam with some of my friend's bands occasionally. If you stick with it, the opportunities will come. :)
