i'm attending my family reunion for the first time in several years. it's 2 nights and involves almost non-stop jamming. a dear friend of the family plays bass for us in our band. my cousin who works overseas also plays bass. if i'm lucky, i see him once a year. here's the problem. they are both attending which is great. but.....already there is a question of who will play what and when and so on. with us axe slingers, you know, you can have several guys or gals up there playing at the same time. it's differnt' with bass players. i'm already expecting some drama and hurt feelings.
has anyone ever been in this situation? what did you do and how did things turn out?
yes, i worry too much.

I think you just explain to both that because of the situation it would be fun to take turns. I doubt your friend will mind if its the case that you hardly see your cousin.

Hope you have a great time! Let us know how it goes!

If it were me, plain and simple, I'd tell them that this is some form of unnecessary drama which I choose not to be involved with. They will have to work it out and once resolved, I'll be available for either or both.

Why not put their names in a bag assigning certain hours to whoever is picked or alternate sets.

for me, the solution is simple, yet complicated. i play with one guy once a week. i play with one guy once a year, if i'm lucky. jeez, i just want everyone to enjoy the opportunity to visit and play music. sometimes you gotta take a seat and listen rather than perform. i will address this tomorrow at rehearsal. i'm not looking forward to it.

I don't get to play at my family reunions... No one in my family wants to hear electric guitar... Only banjos and dolcemers. :P

I think you are stressing out over nothing. I feel that you can come to a happy medium by splitting the set or asking one of them if they can play some rhythm guitar which I am sure one would be able to do. You can always have more than one rhythm player, just look at a benefit show like The Concert for George where they had at least 5 guys playing guitar.

I think we're missing a crucial point here. Nuts to being tactful: which one is the best bass player? :D

Didn't they invent the tambourine for this type of situation? jk. But seriously, have them take turns and keep everyone included somehow. And just keep drinkin' some whiskey shots one after the other like my family reunions and you'll be too drunk to play in about 3 hours. ha ha

Who's to say it has the be the same bassist for the entire duration?

Whenever myself and some friends get together it's always fun switching off guitar and bass players.

It's only a jam.. skill level shouldn't be an issue here.
