I have a few questions about vintage guitars and could use some Guidelines, I understand that the answers to these questions may vary largely from guitar to guitar, but general percentages and comments would be most helpful.

How much does a refinish decrease a guitars value?
How much do repairs decrease a guitars value?
How much do non original parts, specifically just tuners, or just pickups, or non original case, how much would each of those individually decrease value?
Since checking is common in older guitars, does that decrease value?

Is the blue book of guitars any good? Is there a better book out there? Is there a better book for vintage instruments?

Thanks, could really use the info. If you could be as specific as possible that would be amazing! Thank you. jdwright6@gmail.com if you want to email.

You're best bet for all your answers is George Gruhn. Check out Gruhn.com. He's about the best there is when it comes to vintage guitars and guitar repairs.

I definitely know George Gruhn, most of that stuff isn't all that easy to find on his site, so I was hoping to find someone that knew what they were talking about. Thanks for the heads up!

Unfortunately your questions depend on so much. Yes, a refin works against a guitars value, but it depends on who did it, the quality of the finish and the type/desirability of the guitar.

Repairs do affect the value but it depends on the type of damage, the quality of the repair and the type of guitar.

Non original parts affect value but it again depends on what parts and type of guitar.

There's no easy answers and what your really asking for is an appraisal which non of us here can give.

You should take the guitar (s) in for an appraisal. Gruhn offers them for $50. Send him pics and a good description of the instrument.

I think the best thing to do when it comes to a vintage instrument, is leave it alone. But that's only if you *care* about the value.
