Why do most YouTube or even instructional guitar videos have the heads cut off? I would think people want to be seen. Like having your 15 min. of fame. Anybody have any insight into this phenomenon? Seems 80 percent are like this. I find it strange. Is it just me?

Well most of those videos are shot with a stationary camera so it makes sense to focus on the guitar. Plus the closer the camera is zoomed on the guitar the easier it is to see what is being taught.

Thus ends my theory.

I bet a lot of 'em have child support, alimony, warrants, psycho ex's, FBI,
Scotland Yard, MI6, Interpol and God knows what after 'em.

Still rockin', though.

Its bad enough to possibly have to deal with all the comments and people who might say you can't play after posting your video/lesson...Maybe they don't want people to be able say they're ugly or make funny faces while they play on top of all that...

That was one of the funniest post's I've seen today. Dont worry, its just my sense of humour.
I dunno, maybe they want people getting the idea that us guitarist's are headless

People love the power of being anonymous. There are zero consequences or repercussions when you can't put a face to who's behind the video.

I think nicholsoni summed it up best. The focus is mainly on the hands and fretboard unless you are really into guitar faces and we all know how weird those can look.

I'm sure it's just as Nicholsoni suggests -- you're not going to get a tight focus on the guitar if you have half the body in the frame. But as others say, not everyone probably wants to be seen whether shy about their appearance or whatever.

You could always have an establishing opening shot (all of you) but that would require either an assistant or editing. (Shoot wide, shoot the camera segment then edit the two together.) I guess if you really want to be seen, have a small still picture of you in the frame at all times, say resting in front of your arm.

Then too, I suppose there is always that chance that the film maker is wanted for something as Taurus says. Hey, okay if the ex and the FBI learn your new riff, just so long as they don't end up giving you plenty of time to practice it from your cell.
