Is there a website that can clue me in on different bands and guitarists, what gear they used on a certain song or what tunings they used on certain songs? Some of the ZZ Top tunes are in special tunings I'm sure, and some Greg Allman stuff too.

Well the two bands you mentioned I would believe you are referring to the slide playing which would be in open E or A mainly for those bands.
