So, I purchase a 1964 Jazz Bass, all original except for it's had a re-finish (to it's original tobacco 'burst) sometime in the nineties and the pickguard is not original. During the refinish the headstock decal was obliterated and wasn't replaced but the owner did purchase a couple of fakes off the internet which, thankfully, he never got around to putting on. This is a good thing as what he'd got for his supposed "from Fender for a price" $20 were two 'mid 1965 to 1967' decals and not the '1962 to mid 1965' decals as needed.
While it makes no difference to the instrument's capabilities I see the lack of decal as like me going about somewhat undressed, no trousers on for instance. So I set about trying to find and fit the correct decal. To this end, and as I live in Netherlands, I phone Fender UK. They were about as helpful as an ashtray on a motorcycle and seven seperate phone calls later, and me being dizzy from being spun around in so many circles, I gave it up. I followed the advice given on Fender.com for getting vintage decals in The U.S. but that doesn't work in Europe. I contacted nine different registered Fender dealers in Amsterdam & Utrecht but the word was the same, we're not getting anything out of it so f**k off. This was the same info I got from Fender UK.

Then, a breakthrough, a charming chap at Dirk Witte in Utrecht who has a real soft spot for vintage Fenders and isn't just in it for the money, contacted Fender Germany for me. Now Fender Germany won't do it the same way as Fender U.S. but they do have a vintage decal service. All I have to do is get my guitar to them and they will re-decal it for me with the genuine article, and that at no cost. Why Fender UK don't offer this service is beyond me but it seems that if they're not making any wampum then they're just not interested.

Sorry about the prattling on but if the gist of this post helps someone with a similar problem then it's all been worthwhile. It can, with a little effort, be accomplished.

Cheers....Kegs.
