Personally I think to relic a guitar is just plain daft and more so impatient. My main guitar is getting there fine with playing cos that's how it supposed to be done.

It also means that the areas of wear will be the areas most used and abused by me. Some people relic guitars on frets that they personally don't use that much as it isn't a consistent area of their playing.

You may as well save for a really expensive Lamborghini but ask them to stick 100,000 miles on the clock beforehand from places you will never have driven.

Just my 2 cents.

I am not a fan of faux distressing a guitar. If a guitar is beat up do to natural wear and tear that's another story. But paying thousands extra so your bass can have the same damage as Jaco's bass and the same wear and tear that Gilmours has is a little silly to me.

I have a ding on my strat that is bothering me so much i may refinish the whole damn thing.

Just wondering who came up with the word rellic'd or is it reliced, or maybe reliqued?

Is it even a word?

My guitars show wear from playing them frequently. I'm not a fan of the artificial relic'd models.

Personally I think you should relic it by taking it down off the wall and playing it daily for the next 20 years!!!

I think this whole relicing thing is just another silly fad initiated by a rock star and picked up by everybody and his dog, just as the fad that Van Halen started by putting stripes like electrical tape on his guitars. Like I said in a post yesterday, relicing makes as much sense as going to a car dealership and buying a new car with parking lot dings, rust spots and stained upholstery,it serves absolutely no purpose other than making a guitar look like it's been played for years.I like to keep my guitars looking like they've just come out of the factory.Don't get me wrong,I play my guitars hard and often but I'm always mindful not to cause scratches and dings.Even my pick guards are scratch free as I have refined my strumming and picking so that the pick only hits the strings.Let your guitar age honestly and with dignity rather than deface it by butchering the body.

I say relic if you want to.

Heres my self relic'd strat. The neck is old and worn, the body was new and shiney. I love it. Throw it in the back of the car, throw some amps and bags on it. Drive to the gig, get it out, plug it in. No worries.

Image

It looked rubbish with a new body and old neck same as a chipped urethane or polyester finished guitar does. Atleast now it matches.

You wouldnt believe thats a polyester finished body either. It took me hours to tcut through the glossy horribleness before I got to work with the kraft knife.

Personally, I am not into relics, as I think feel they are kind of a poseur, or poser depending on your spelling, thing...sort of like buying ripped jeans...

HOWEVER, I will say that I do find some relics that are well done to sort of be artistic...

But if you do it, please be careful and do not make one of the ugly relics you see on eBay that look either like there was some sort of chemical, fire, or power tool accident...

hey everyone.

well first let me clear things up. I dont play bass, my little brother plays bass. Im a guitar man. blues is my poisen, I cant get enough of it haha
I saw my two heros at the time (I have a few more added to the list now) John Mayer and Eric Clapton playing crossroads at the crossroads guitar festival, it was a youtube video but still captivating non the less. but thats another story.

as far as beating up my strat, that beautiful work of art is my baby, i would never do anything like that to such a beautiful and eligant instrument. i have only had mine for about 4 months maybe and i love it double every day. i do want my guitar to wear down but only with time and only by my own playing and long hours will i let any wear touch that guitar.....

and also. if you all have any words of advice or blues guitar wisdom or just musician wisdom at all please be so kind as to share.

Im 19 and a sponge when it comes to musical wisdom from older musicians

thanks again guys

ps.. it is just a squire p-bass, lol i reliced the $@!& out of it already lol
it came out pretty cool too , i didnt do the traditional relic tho i wated it to look old but also like it feel out of a tour bus and got to close to the pyro technics lol. i had a good time with it, i strongly recoment it for someone with a good deal of free time or stress disorders. or add lol

I don't think that anyone can say Chet doesn't play guitar enough, like most of us he's a guitar fanatic who plays daily. It does take a long time to make a guitar show signs of wear and tear especially with todays finishes. I'm a compulsive player and have been for over 40 yrs yet guitars that I got new in 66-67 still look almost mint despite years of playing. If a guitar is treated properly it will hold it's newness for years thus taking a long time to naturally relic.
