I've been playing guitar since I was 14 and I'm 32 now.. I am self taught but have always thought I lacked a certain discipline. So now I'm off to learn blues guitar formally. I'm very excited.

So what would you guys like to learn?

I have a tenth of the experience that you do but I too am very carefully learning the blues from the ground up. I'm banging away at the basic shuffles, scales and chords like a newbie because I want some structure as well. I just had my 2 year anniversary and I had lessons for 6 months at a half hour a week. After that I went on my own and I've learned everything I know by practice and learning tabs. I think that the blues are the heart of so many different genres that you can't help but want to play it if you enjoy guitar.

I skipped over a lot too, downward. I'd like to learn song construction. Not because I want to write songs. I just want to understand how they are built.
It's easy to figure out a blues, even one with extended chords, but changes
in songs and standards mystify me.

I'm guessing the best thing for me to do is simply learn the music I love.
That's usually the path to understanding.

#1 on my list is how to play nice sounding blues solos. That is what I am working the hardest on right now.

#2 is learning the fret board and where every note is, which I am also doing while learning to blues solo

#3 is getting better at muting chords when playing reggae style or funk style chords

#4 one day i'd like to learn to play slide guitar

How to use the modes better and finding the best notes for each chord. A bit of advice for those who are going hard into the blues. This was probably the most enjoyable and also the subject that can really take your playing to the next level. If there are any songs you are going to transcribe note for note Redhouse by Hendrix and Key to the Highway by Derek and the Domino's are 2 must and I will throw in Creams Crossroads. As these songs show you how to mix major and minor pentatonic lines which is the key to sounding like a seasoned player. But you really have to break them down and analyze the note selection.

I'd love to learn Flamenco! I tried to pick up a little when I lived in Barcelona, but didn't have the bucks for lessons. It's such a technically and emotionally advanced style of guitar playing, the good players are serious heavyweights of the 6 string.

I'd like to learn how to fly a boeing F/A-18E/F super hornet in combat missions. What the heck, one costs a mere $60.3 million, with choice of paint, interior appointments, and custom weapons packages available. The external air refueling system is extra!

I guess i wasn't clear about learning something new....on GUITAR! although Dave that is some ambition. I hope you succeed.

I feel the wonderful thing about the guitar is that its something that you'll always be in pursuit of mastering, but just when you get smug there's always another style out there that catches your attention.

I've been re-learning finger picking as of late, broke my fingers on my right hand a few years back on someones face  and my knuckles are kind of sunk in to my hand and since then my pinky moves more so involuntarily with my ring finger. Its annoying but I'm getting there. (The guy more than deserved it btw but that's another story)

Also I've playing a lot more slide in open G since I got my Telecoustic Deluxe and Acoustasonic 30. No-where near mastering it but I would love to get good enough to inject it into the band as I'm a big Faces, Stones, Stradlin and Georgia Satellites guy.

Apart from guitar I've always wanted to learn piano and sax a bit further but I'm frightened starting something else on a more serious note (no pun intended) would take away from me getting further as a guitar player.

I also aspire to learn more fingerstyle playing and Spanish/Classical guitar, all in time though

I would like to have a better understanding of scales and applying them to build great solos. I feel that is my biggest weak point as a player. I would also love to learn to build guitars so when i'm an old fart, I can be that grouchy old bag in the basement who builds nice guitars for his grand kids to rock out with.

Cuz ya gotta have goals.

Different chord voicings and structures.....and then using them during a song performance.

Knowing where a chord is on the fretboard is one thing....getting there quickly is quite another.... :x

I've been playing for over 25 years and I still squeeze the crap out of the neck with my left hand.

I'm really dedicating myself to developing a softer touch, especially when playing electric.
