I used to manage a CD store until it was closed due to low sales. Its been over two years since I was exposed to that much music. I do not have cable so I do not get exposure there, even though most of the stuff I've heard on music stations doesn't grab me at all. I have a friend who has an EXTENSIVE catalog he has been downloading and every now and then he plays some stuff he thinks I would like, but I can't really get into anything. Sometimes if I have an album and I get to listen to it for a couple of weeks it may grow on me, but nothing GRABS me anymore. Am I just getting old? The only new music I tend to buy is from established artists putting out thier umpteenth album. I try not to discriminate musically (or any other way for that matter) but my main areas of listening pleasure lie in classic rock, blues, funk, reggaae and ska. Maybe I should go back and discover some Motown or old soul.

Maybe you should try Izzy Stradlin, he plays all the genre's you mentioned apart from Ska but does some mean surf rock too.

As for any new bands I am the exact same! Most bands I listen to were established either before I was born or when I was a kid.

I've never listened to Izzy's solo stuff before but I do like old G n' R. I kind of went throuugh a surf phase last year but it was pretty brief.

You might want to try Pandora radio if you haven't already. Or Slacker radio. Both are good for finding out about new artists in genres you already like. :)

Hi yodacaster, believe me I feel your pain,it's not a matter of you or the rest of us growing older but the fact that today's listening audiences and "musicians" aren't nearly as sophisticated musically as we are/were. Most of the music put out for the AM/FM stations is just generic, mass produced, vacuous pablum that has no musical merit whatsoever except maybe a beat that may be "danceable"but little else.Sadly one of my daughters goes for this garbage despite being exposed to "good" music all her life but the younger of my 2 daughters, bless her heart, dearly loves the music that I grew up on and plays some bass and harp(harmonica). I subscribe to Sirius Satellite radio and for about $15 a month I get the best of music of any genre of decade I wish to.I also subscribe to LastFM which is an online format that will infinitely play any artist or genre you like for $3 a month.Don't worry, there is hope for bona fide music lovers out there beyond the realms of AM/FM claptrap.BTW Pandora is also a great format.

I have the same issue man, nothing new really impresses me at all. I have been digging into music going further and further back to before the 60's trying to find stuff that is new to me. I have been listening to a lot of Lonnie Johnson lately, the 2 disc set Lonnie Johnson and Eddie Lang "Blue Guitars" is phenomenal.

New school blues check out Joe Bonamassa, if you haven't already.

World style, Traditional Latin Rock/Blues/Reggae funk style check out group Mana'

Hey CC. I checked out the links and I liked the surf and the reggae. The reggae track made me want to go home and do some recording as I have recorded a few reggae/ska tracks before. The other 2 tracks, while they do sound good musically, they just don't grab me off the bat. Those would be ones that would grow on me after a few listens. Maybe I'm expecting a hook or maybe I'm just too critical.

Hey,
I tried out Bonamassa but didn't really dig it. Great player, but still nothing. Maybe I didn't hear the right songs...it was something about alchol I think. I checked out Derek Trucks as well and it sounded too "adult contemporary blues". I like my blues greasy and dirty!

I like soul music, but never listened to any Bobby Womack before. I really got into Wilson Pickett a couple of years ago. I just rewatched The Commitments last week!

I love The Commitments. Brilliant movie, every time I'm out in Dublin I think of that movie!

You should check out some Bobby Womack on youtube. Good stuff and he's a decent player to boot.
