Again, I was listening to my Xmas iPod. I was totally drawn in by the guitar work of Danny Kirwan. The stuff I have is from the middle period of FleetwoodMac, post blues and pre-Nicks and Buckingham.

He had such a great touch, Clapton-ish on the solos, and his backing work was even better. Never burying the vocalist but interesting, baby.
Inspite of being difficult and sometimes crazy, he was driving, supportive and song based. As though he had an idea of what the track should sound like, and made that happen, no matter his state.

I have "Spare Me a Little of Your Love". I love the 'rhthym' guitar, but the solo is just so perfect. Some rotating horn thing, maybe a wah-wah, I dont know. Check it out.

I guess he and Green damaged their brains on the same night.

Anywayz, sad...

Danny Kirwan had his magnificent moments. He joined the band before Peter Green split, and their guitar work together (with Jeremy Spencer) could be awesome. Listen to Kiln House - or better yet, listen to Live at the Boston Tea Party. Amazing!!

And I always felt that the Danny Kirwan/Bob Welch period of Fleetwood Mac is overlooked much too ofte.

It is a shame that he ruined his life and music with alcohol.

Apologies for misspelling rthym in my opening post. And I put it in quotes because his backing work was a lead line in itself. Very cool.

I'm gonna order Bare Trees, Future Games and Kiln House today. I'm
going to make Danny an influence. 'Cause I tell you, goodpeople, if you can emote like Danny, with a few lines, no need to shred. Unless you want to.

Check out "Sometimes", off of Future Games.

Now, since this is my thread, and you are my guests:
Who wants coffee?

It's cool, I was gonna make some anyway.

A colleague of mine, an anesthesiologist, misspelled the word arrhythmia on a chart entry. I kidded him about it, and we had a good laugh, but he still never fails to forget the day.

I've always been a fan of Danny Kirwan. I was lucky enough to see Fleetwood Mac back in 1969, at the Free Trade Hall in Manchester.
Green, Kirwan and Spencer, Wow!! BB King was there as well, it was a blues night and ok, it was 40 years ago, so it's difficult remembering how it all sounded then but I recall being blown away by it all.
Also, at that time, I can remember every time I went in my local bar, which was nearly every night. The first thing I did, after getting my drink, was make my way to the juke box and put on 'Jigsaw Puzzle Blues' two minutes of delicious guitar intricacy. If you haven't got this on your playlist,
get the tabs and learn this little gem.
Danny Kirwan has certainly been missed by many of us.
It's strange that you mention emulating him, I do that, or try, nearly every morning, playing along with Snowy White cd's. There is plenty of room to throw in some Kirwan style back-up lines and I always think of him and what he might do, at a particular point.
And the sound he might employ. I use quite a lot of reverb and delay, with lashings of finger vibrato and bends, with one of my Gibsons or my Telecaster.
Great fun and he is sadly missed, I always rated that guy.

Jigsaw puzzle blues is just a absolute masterclass in acheiving different tones on a guitar with different pick attack.
Never heard any of Kirwans stuff aside from the Mac tracks. Like Crying is another all Kirwan written melodic masterpiece of country blues. What kind of curse must have been put on that band eh? Greeny goes gaga, Spencer joins The Long Haired Children of Jesus, and Kirwan ends up living on the streets. It's hard to believe that they outsold both The Stones and The Beatles combined sales from 67-69.

Poor guys was a alcoholic living rough last I heard. A reporter found him and tried to interview him. Kirwan would only speak until the tenents super ran out.

Danny Kirwan interview

For the record (cause I'm very very pedantic) Kirwan was drafted in because Green wanted a two guitar sound and Spencer (whilst being probably the best Elmore'a'like slide player ever) couldnt play Greenies soft touch music. Green even played the slide parts on Albatross.

Come back Dan, we love ya mate.
