I've been invited to sit in on a Zydeco gig tomorrow with one of my jammin' buddies. He knows I like trying different things (musically), so he's going to give me a chance. I've never actually tried playing Zydeco, so today I'm giving myself a crash course from youtube. But any tips/advise from you have in addition would be much appreciated. :)

There was a Zydeco band who came up here a few years ago and I've been trying to determine who it was in a vain atttempt to help but so far I have failed. Please accept this as a courtesy bump for the topic.

That's all right, thanks for the bump. :) Well, youtube has a lot less on the subject of playing Zydeco guitar than I thought it would. I couldn't really find anything as far a lessons go. So I'm going to switch to plan B. My parents have always been big Zydeco fans, so I'm going to raid the record collection and learn the old fashioned way.

Yep, that's the best way... listen listen, soak it in, play along. Sounds like your folks have a useful record collection, you're lucky they don't have a bunch of orchestral crooner stuff or show tunes, or great speeches etc etc with no guitars in sight!

Thanks for the suggestions. :) I ended up using Pandora internet radio for most of my practice. I think I'll be all right, especially when I'll be able to watch the other guitar player for chord changes if I have to. It was the feel that I was mainly concerned with, especially with the solos. I know solos are about 10% of what you play at best, but it's not good if you suck for the 10% of the time that people are actually pay close attention to you.

You know, Zydeco kind of strikes me as a mix of Blues and Ska for some reason. It's like Blues with a Ska feel to it.

Well, the gig went well. :) It was a lot of fun, and I got my first serious sunburn of the year. It wasn't as difficult as I thought it would be to follow along, and generally my solos were OK. I need to work on my major pentatonic though.

good to hear. it always helps your playing to try out new styles.
