I was trained in blues and funk when i was a kid (10 yo) and I hated it. I just wanted to play the alt-grunge power cord music of the day. I'm glad I stuck with it b/c that blues study has really contributed to my personal style, which is very eclectic and unique. On the other hand, Smashing Pumpkins is my favorite band and I can play nearly all of their catalog which is more demanding/challenging than the stereotypical grunge rock of the 90's. Their music is very dynamic and innovative. However, my personal guitar hero and major influence on technique and tone is Mark Knopfler

Long live grunk!I enjoy a more rhythym based with little licks thrown in like drowning pool or Alice in chains on my Ibanez, I just like to rock it out, that being said, as a new fender player it seems to make me wanna slow down and listen a little more than the others, just a little though... 8)

"No offense, but you suck?"

Your friend should consider a career with the State Department, he's quite the diplomat,

I try to play several different styles, but anything that's super-technical with a buttload of notes per second I'm uninterested in.

I play in several different originals bands, and they all play slightly different styles. For example, in my main band I play old school punk rock and roll guitar, in a Ramones/Clash/Pistols/Dolls/Buzzcocks type style.

In my roots rock side band, it's more like Tom Petty/Neil Young/Dylan/Warren Zevon.

I also play bass in a keyboard-rock trio that does some Ben Folds 5/Dave Matthews type stuff, and mandolin (with some guitar) in a acoustic-based folk-rock group.

Oh, and I play guitar and mandolin in church too.
