What style would you consider your playing?
The reason I made this topic, was cause of this;
The other day, me and my friend who plays guitar, were having a jam, and his style's more ACDC, guns'n'roses type playing, and mines totally different. Anyway, he said, "I'm suprised on your playing. I thought it would be much more than power chords and a crap load of distortion. No offense, but you suck." Now firstly, believe me he is very negative about people, and super postitive about himself, so I'm used to him saying i suck cause he says it to everyone, and i've known him for basically my whole life. But thats not the point, my point is, personally i reckon he's style crap, purely cause I dont like the type of music he plays.
You could play blues, and be really awesome at that, and someone could say, 'Your playing sucks big time" when the person who said it plays punk when other blues players might say, "woah dude, your really awesome!!". You get what I'm saying??
So we've all gotta respect each others styles.
I would consider my style a nirvana/fang type playing, so grunge and punk. Together, grunk :) (thats a cool word 8) )

Thankfully my 14 year old has stopped prefacing her observations with "No offence, but..." It would be more accurate and honest to simply state that you're about to make an offensive remark and you hope that you don't get in trouble for it. Anyway, Riley, sounds like you know not to take your friend too seriously on such matters... my view: if it's composed of power chords, pentatonic scales and riffs built off those scales, it's all the same style, regardless of the amount of distortion present.

My style..? On my Strat, I'm always playing the blues these days, but very little pentatonic action for some reason. I play a lot with the extended chords (9ths, 13ths, etc) and their associated scale tones. This is not so I can make myself sound fancy (I'm not!), I'm just trying to think what my "style" must be. I guess it must officially be some sort of jazzy blues. Heh. Funny, because that's not exactly my favourite music to listen to. The stuff I do listen to, I like to keep separate so I can still enjoy it without finding out that there's a "trick" to it.

On my flamenco guitar, I play flamenco music because... well... that's what it's for. So, if you heard me in that context my style would most definitely be "Flamenco". :)

erratic. It depends on the mood. I do play alot of rock stuff, but different genre rock stuff. From stuff like alice in chains to stone sour to the stones to john 5 to crue for example. I have alot of influences and couldnt pinpoint what style it is as alot of influences come through my playing. This is not just my opinion but those of others that have heard me play too.

I play 50s - 60s country, rockabilly, 50s - 60s rock, and blues. My Tele's are perfect for these styles of music.

Riley - for you, I'll get my Mustang out and work on some "Grunk"! :wink:

You're always going to run across people like that and they're full of BS. You have the right attitude about music, he doesn't at all. It's as simple as that.

I guess what I play is mostly blues/rock. Although the blues purists don't like me too much, and I'm too blues for the rock people. :lol: I play a smattering of funk, jazz (I fake it), country (I fake it), gospel (I fake it) and classic r&b in there too.

With my church band (which is more modern rock) I still do the blues thing, but it's more of a Jimi Hendrix chord thing than full tilt blues. And overall the sound is more along the lines of modern indie rock. It can sound a lot like U2 as well. It just depends on the song.

When I'm playing bass i play sort of Alternative-Indie-Folk-Fusion-Rock.
What I play on guitar tends to sound like a sort of Blues-Grunk.

Metal - leaning towards melodic death/progressive with a touch of folk/celtic.

The sound and tone I am going for is a Latin Blues fusion, something like this:

Though I Love Metal, i don't enjoy playing it that style. Possibly because i suck at playing it. I think of myself as having a more Floydy, eclectic style. Or at least I like to think so in my head. I got in to recording engineering because i found myself very interested in sound rather than just the playing aspect then moved into Sound FX editing when the business took a shift... ok i just rambled far more than the topic called for... sorry folks.
