If you can't find an appropriate stand cut the fingers from non-latex gloves and slide them over the contact points on the pads.

cool good tip, i have noticed the finish on my Hwy 1 tele starting to wear away a bit but it doesn't concern me for my Tele, I like it looking worn...but on the new Strat I want to keep it fresh as long as possible.

Also try any micro fiber cloth, you can cover all contact points with that...

I wrap the contact points with old plain cotton t-shirts.

Lay Fender polish cloth over contact points. reminds you to wipe down guitar after playing too.

I've found that a lot of the stands that are harmful for the Nitro finish guitars will usually say something like, "not safe for nitro finishes". Or.......I imagine if you go to a music shop, they can tell you there if a stand is safe or not.

I would also have to agree with the Hercules stands. I own the compact one and I love it. Very strong, and folds up very small to fit into a gig bag.

+1 on that. Bonus: if you're married (I'm not but once was) it solves the "are you EVER going to retire that ratty old t-shirt" problem too! :D
