Malcolm McLaren, the promoter that brought the Sex Pistols to the world stage and just about single handedly launched punk rock died this morning in New York.McLaren had been diagnosed with cancer some time ago and today it took him.McLaren was the one who hired a barge to go down the Thames with the Sex Pistols playing God Save The Queen as they were in the proximity of Buckingham Palace. The outrage this stunt caused went worldwide and added to the Pistol's infamy, making them the Crown Princes of the punk movement. If not for Malcolm the punk movement probably would have gone the way of disco just another flash in the pan musical fad.RIP Malcom you were pure genius.

Malcolm was also the man behind The New York Dolls, Adam and the Ants, and Bow Wow Wow.

Controversial, for sure, but a real innovator.

I watched a documentary on the pistols, not to long ago. It seemed that Malcolm had his hands full... RIP

R.I.P Malcolm McLaren

"added to the Pistol's infamy, making them the Crown Princes of the punk movement"

The Ramones and Cheap Trick predate the pistols

Yeah the Ramones are pretty much responsible for propagating punk.
Everywhere they played in 73-76 a week after they played a load of punk bands would start up.
(Jello Biafra, Machine gun in a clowns hand).

Theres a video on the web of Joe Strummer talking about the first time he and the pistols went to see the Ramones. Rotten was terrified of getting his head kicked in by some bawdy yanks.

Sorry to hear of Mclarens demise. Punk would have happend just as much without him though. The Clash predate the pistols by one year, the Uk Subs by a couple of months.

SBLS I am with you on the Ramones but Cheap Trick-Punk? You have me lost on that one and especially considering Rick Nielsens talent as a guitar player. As far as the Sex Pistols they are still one of the worst bands I have ever heard and simply talentless.

cool straycat113, cheap trick power rock in those earliest of days energizer Bun E Carlos and his band could pretty much get you to forget what ever act you just saw when they hit the stage I gave punk a closer listen after seeing Cheap Trick. did that make sense SC?

Vivian Westwood , Malcolm's partner at the time was probably more responsable for bringing punk rock to the front, without the punk look, who knows, would there have been a so called Punk Movement, without the novelty fashion who knows what direction it would have taken.
The whole popular music industry certainly got a kick in the $%£& through Malcolm Mclaren's involvement, probably responsible for a good number of bands deciding to go it alone without having to sign to some big record label who's only interest was to make money most likely, much like X factor and the like today, so for that alone RIP Malcolm

The look was already underway with the New York Dolls.

Punk is an American invention that owes nothing at all to England or English people until the time of Discharge and Clay records.

I stand corrected niki, I was never into punk myself, some of the music yes, but never the fashion side of it, never heard of some of the bands either when any punk threads appear and thats probably down to the fashion too.

PS ...............UK  some people are begining to think that the UK is part of England....none taken by the way

For years as a punk I was under the misconception that punk was a english thing. It's just like everything else, it's not our fault we do it better, so much so that people think we did invent it. Just like blues and rock'n'roll.
(I jest)

The thing is it was fast paced, incredibly fast paced as a genre. You got Iggy and the Stooges in 73, then the Ramones from 74, the Dolls from 75, then the english lot. Mclaren and Westwood did market it expertly through the Pistols and gave it a real adrenaline shot. But it was dead by 79.
Live fast die young i suppose.

Off the top of my head I couldn't name any track from the examples you give niki, maybe time to broaden my outlook, in my case .....................
Slow & steady wins the race

There was also the Saints in Australia in '74. I was 11 then and my parents hated music like that so I didn't get to hear much of it except at friends' houses.

Over here most of my friends looked to the UK for the new cool stuff. Like nikininja said clay records, Discharge and GBH were the biggest influence on most of my friends. Before that it was Cockney Rejects and 999 and stuff. I still listen to that stuff sometimes. Its kind of strange my 15 year son tells me the other day he's getting into Oi music. Im not sure if that is such a good thing lol..........

Punk would still have happened without Malcom. But RIP anyway. Cash for Chaos!

and English Dogs, the other band on Clay records. They live a stones throw from me. The drummer was my barber for awhile. That took guts when going for a cropping.
