I'm gonna turn 54 this June. My youth has passed. Years ago, back in the late 70's and most of the 80's I was a touring, full time, yeah, thats all I did, musician. I look back and enjoy the memories of that care free life back then. Now it's a day job, wife and kids, rent, bills, etc.
What's keeping you younger guys from being a full time musician? And whats keeping the guys that are out there doing it full time, doing it?

touring pic's?

Not being able to afford a full time roadie.

Lugging the equipment around has really started to take its toll, and I find it is starting to overtake the enjoyment I get out of playing live.

A general lack of skill and talent, coupled with a strong desire to keep my bills paid!

Life. Responsibilities: mortgage, children, bills and the fact that a have a good stable job that pays well. Too much at risk. :(

I'm almost 57 and when I was younger I wanted to play full time but had 3 kids and a steady day job check coming in...one of my sons is doing the full time musician thing now but it's tough, especially here in the Nashville area where everybody it seems comes to make it big....there's more than 1,352 guitar pickers in Nashville,John Sebastion. 8)
I hear that from people that have tried it in LA and NYC,also.
I think that getting a start where there's not a zillion bands would be easier to make some money, here you can play and not make much at all.

Canned music. :( Vegas started going pre-recorded years ago and the opportunities to play live are getting fewer every day.

wouldnt know where to start and the mortgage. A band is all good and well, but finding musicians that you can gel with and have an understanding is hard in my area. Either people want to do death metal or indie stuff. Im not akin to wating to do that.

I used to play full time (13 years on the road)+a few sit down gigs here & there ;met a lot of really fine women and a few I wouldn't want momma to know about! All in all I enjoyed it I am now living in a very rural area that borders on being backward in its economic and social attitudes so I now work VFW/AmVet/Moose/Eagle lodges on the weekends I would love to work 5<>6 nights week with a good sax &B3 player doing MOR format.Best wishes to all players and success in your pursuits of this weird thing that we bi-pedal hominids call music

I started playing in bands at age 16. By the age of 24 I was playing in roadbands until I was 54 or so. I saw a lot of the shady and corrupt things that happen when living out of a suitcase and going town to town but also it had some very great moments that I'll always remember.

I don't regret it one bit, but it's not for everyone. I've recently signed an agreement with a major sports group to use some of my recordings (or parts of) for their many affiliates after a year long negotiation.

A goal without a plan is just a wish! - words to live by.
