For those who watched Idol last night how many knew that was the great Nuno Bettencourt playing as a sideman in that horror Rhianon's band. I have always been a fan of his playing and besides having chops to die for the guy always had a greasy funky rhythm style. You really cant get much better as a player than that, and if the best job you can land with all that talent is as a sideman to a Disney character I feel bad for all you young players.

I didn't see the show, but I've heard his playing and agree. It seems that sometimes when music is your only income, you do what you have to do.

His old Extreme bandmate, Gary Cherone, is playing bars around Boston with a "The Who" tribute band called "Slipkid".

Wow, I can't imagine the ego shot you'd take to go from a chart topper to a cover band or Idol back up player.

I wasn't a huge Extreme fan but the talent that shows on their songs was always evident.

I thought Gary Cherone, was somehow part of a non-Hagar, non-Roth version of Van Halen at present...maybe I'm wrong.

I saw him performing with her on SNL maybe a month or so ago so he must be a pert of her "band". The only original parts of her performances are his guitar playing. She sounds like Beyonce and uses one of those voice things that makes her sound computerized like every other pop star out right now. I don't usually like to bash any artist but they really do all sound the same to me now.

Rip Van Winkle: The original lineup of Van Halen (albeit w/ Eddie's son on bass instead of Mikey) reformed two years ago, completing already one world tour. Eddie got married shortly afterward. Rumors are they are currently working up a new album.

Rip Van Winkle???

I know there are a lot of die hard Eddie fans out there, but IMO VH hasn't done anything relevant enough to follow in the last 25 years, so I guess I fell behind on the annual singer change a bit. lol ;)

You gotta do what you gotta do. No shame in it. I bet he's being paid well.

The dude is a very talented player for sure. But if he can't write hit songs, then the best way of staying successful in the music business as a player is by playing in someones backing band who DOES write hit songs.

I'm glad to see that his ego didn't get in the way of reality.

Thats what I was going to say, It's all about money, show me the cash I don't care!!!! I would play for the Mickey Mouse band if the money was right.
