For what I like to play (and it's what I currently have):

1 electric (the strat);
1 six string acoustic;
1 twelve string acoustic.

To stop me wishing after reading some of the other posts here? As many as the budget will allow...

I'm with you BN,I don't collect guitars like it's a contest or for bragging rights(most people don't know how many guitars I have)but because I just love them.Every guitar has it's own little idiosyncracies and 5 Strats can have 5 different personalities.The different sounds and feel of each guitar is something that draws me to them.I also collect mugs and beer steins- over 200 at last count-and hoard and read books-I have several hundred maybe thousands of just about any subject especially if it's related to cars or music -and I have a pretty good collection of Corgi,Dinky and Matchbox model cars from the 50s and 60s.Collecting is just something that grows almost into an obsession in some cases but it's rooted in having a great love for some things.

I look forward o your episode of Hoarders!!!

just kidding, I share a couple of those hobbies. I love the old dinky cars!!

On that vein, with the seemingly impending doom of the print media, what are crazy old people gonna hoard when the supply of newspapers dries up?

I don't need 21 guitars, but since I could afford it and have room for them, why not?...I've wasted more money on worse things like strippers and liquor...at least the guitars don't use you and don't leave you hungover...

...yes, unlike a stripper when a guitar is in your lap it doesn't leave until you remove it......it makes better music and has very nice curves.... 8)

I could get by with just my acoustic/electric 6 string and acoustic/electric bass.

To expand from there, I'd add back the Yamaha AES1500 semi-hollow and the next in - an electric bass (toss up between the SG RI and the J-bass).

The final two at least reasonably "must" add backs would be one of the two US Teles and the Jazz Special Fretless bass.

I used to think I only needed the big four solid body electrics... Stratocaster, Telecaster, Les Paul and SG. Then GAS took over and I added a hollow body Gretsch and a semi-hollow ES 339 and just one more, just one more.... ahem.

I have all of life's necessities covered, I own my house and have no debt. If the urge to buy another guitar hits, I usually go with it. I'm at the trade a guitar to buy a new one point, though. It's more want than need now and I'm comfortable with that.

I usually have 4 guitars in my possession. After a few trades and trying to "thin the herd", I currently down to 2 guitars. I am GASing for one more. I hope that that will do it for me. Then I can concentrate on the new amp purchase.

So in short...3 guitars is enough for me, for now

I have two Teles, one Strat and one Telecoustic that I play. Every other guitar I have just collects dust. The guitars mentioned above are the ones I have bonded with and I only play them. So I guess I could say 4.

Well, ultimately, we don't actually NEED any guitars.

Want though is different.

If we think we need them, we're addicted and need help.

If you're in a band though--at least two is a good idea-one for a back up.
If you're a studio musician, anything you can use on a job is good.

Me, I like variety-
so 1 classical
1 12 string
1 solid body with single coils
1 solid body with humbuckers
1 semi hollow
1 hollowbody archtop
1 steel string flat top
1 bass
1 set up for slide (Can be a reso, acoustic or electric of any sort)

I don't have all that yet.
And I'm okay with what I have.

In my case that is like asking how much money do I need.

I only NEED one classical or acoustic. That's like saying I only need water and a good trail mix to survive. I myself am content with a strat, a tele, and an acoustic. 12 string perhaps in the future, but only if I feel I need one to make a song.
